SINGLE REVIEW | THE BIG DAY – SEND IT by Anne Kelly 4/5

Hotly tipped Glasgow band The Big Day have this week shared their brand new single ‘Send It‘. Their second release of 2024, ‘Send It‘ see’s the band back on form following their stadium rock effort ‘Back to Business‘ in May; which personally failed to inspire. Having become notorious for their animated live presence across the local scene and beyond, ‘Send It‘ should be familiar to those who have witnessed the pleasure of The Big Day live.

Bizarrely reminiscent of of ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ answer sound bites, ‘Send It‘ is definitely one of the bands most catchy tracks yet. “My heart is thumping into overdrive, my blood is pumping and I feel alive” opens vocalist Ryan, repeating the melody again before the tantalizing bridge, steadily paving anticipation before the tracks big chorus.

“I got no money at all, I got no plaques on the wall, when opportunity calls I’m gonna send it!” I love the sentiment of this song; the attitude and determination seethes through the melody. Full of discordant key changes, this 3 minute track is hard to ignore. Taking the stylistic energy of bands such as The Killers – and dare I say it…Devo – alongside the theatrical anthemic intrigue of artist like David Bowie or Sparks; it’s hard to look away from The Big Day.

Whilst ‘Send It‘ doesn’t quite match the pop hooks of their earlier releases ‘Bad Things‘ and ‘Fashion Statement‘, it does capture a grittier, drudgery side to The Big Day which they haven’t quite manage to reveal before. Much better heard live, ‘Send It‘ should be on everybody’s new release radar.
