LO RAYS TRANSFORM KING TUTS INTO A POST-APOCALYPTIC FANTASY
Lo Rays (Courteney Pearson/Northern Exposure)
LIVE REVIEW | LO RAYS | KING TUTS WAH WAH HUT, GLASGOW | 28th March 2026 by Courteney Pearson
Lo Rays aren’t the typical band I’d usually go to see, but their headline set at King Tut’s at the end of last month completely caught me off guard and became impossible to not enjoy.
From the moment they came onstage, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a standard gig. The venue was packed and there was a real buzz in the room even before they started. Once the set kicked in, that energy only built.
What stood out immediately was the theatricality of it all. Lo Rays didn’t just perform their music, they built an environment around it. Large electronic screens flooded the stage with intense, fast-moving visuals, giving everything a more immersive feel. In a venue the size of Tut’s, it made the performance feel much bigger than the room itself.
The band’s visual identity pushed that even further. Dressed in outfits that felt straight out of Mad Max, with dark, heavy styling and bold black face makeup concentrated through the centre of their faces, they have created a loud, striking, post-apocalyptic look.
The stage design and band’s visual identity perfectly matches the intensity of the music and gave the whole set a distinct dystopian edge.
Even coming from the perspective of someone who doesn’t normally listen to this kind of sound, it was very hard not to be pulled in. The combination of heavy instrumentation, electronic elements, and the sheer commitment to the performance made it feel more like a full production than just a gig. I liked the addition of dancers on stage for certain songs, it adds that next layer of performance, which I really enjoyed.
As an overall experience, it was difficult to fault, this is a band who clearly knows how to create a world onstage and bring a crowd into it.
By the end, it didn’t really matter whether it was my usual taste or not. Lo Rays delivered something memorable, and in a venue like King Tut’s, that’s what sticks.
You can catch Lo Rays in all their glory as part of Wide Days 2026 Showcase in Edinburgh on 30th April (limited FREE tickets available here). Or see them back in Glasgow on May 24th at G2 supporting Alt Blk Era – tickets here.
