SINGLE REVIEW | RUFUS CASE STONE – THE WIND AND THE RAIN by Olivia McCallum

‘The wind and the rain’ by Rufus Case Stone is their fourth single and yet another amazing track. It is funk-infused shoegaze alt rock that speeds up and down never quite letting you guess where its going next. An incredibly powerful track perfectly encapsulating the feeling of losing yourself and being lost in life. The sound almost resembles that of Sonic Youth whilst remaining entirely unique.

Hailing from Glasgow, the band formed in 2023 starting out at a youth complex in Castlemilk. Since then, they have played some incredible shows across Scotland, including an incredible headline gig at McChuils last year. This single is latest to join the ranks amongst the band’s 3 others on all major streaming services, following up their last single ‘Forlorn‘ released earlier this year.

The song has yet another beautiful vocal performance from lead singer Charlie. I don’t think you could find a vocal performance more suited to the track than the one given, Charlie’s voice blends so seamlessly with Donald’s gritty distorted guitar which is only further complimented by Sonny’s fuzy funk fusion bass and Milo’s punchy drums and crashing symbols.

This is a track that could so easily be plucked from the shelves of a second hand record shop and fit perfectly in with your 90s grungegaze collection. A perfect fusion of dramatic tempo changes and grungy melodic guitar and bass with stunningly powerful vocals. There is an undeniable underlying influence of 90s shoegaze icons, The Smashing Pumpkins.

For fans of The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and Queen’s of the Stone Age, don’t let “The wind and the rain” breeze past you!!
