Single Review | Jamie Webster – Just Begun by Myles Pearson

Jamie Webster has done it again.

The Liverpudlian has reached a point where his songs instantly connect with listeners. Just Begun still carries all the things which have made the Scouser such a huge figure over the last few years – warmth, honesty, and a MASSIVE singalong chorus. However, there’s something a little more reflective running through this one.

The thing is, it feels as though Webster is slowing down for a second and taking stock of everything around him.

The track arrives ahead of his upcoming album, Running Round The Sun, and if this single is anything to go by, the record could show a more thoughtful and emotionally rounded side to him. The huge choruses are still there, naturally. You can already hear this one echoing around festival fields and packed venues with arms over shoulders and pints flying somewhere into the night. Though underneath all of that familiarity, there’s a quieter emotional shift holding the song together.

Musically, Webster keeps things restrained. The production never tries to overpower the track, leaving space for the lyrics to breathe, which suits him. Jamie Webster has always been at his strongest when he sounds like himself rather than trying to be perfect. Nothing here feels forced. It just sounds honest.

Lyrically, there’s a sense of someone navigating change whilst trying not to lose themselves in it. Success changes people whether they like it or not, and there are moments throughout ‘Just Begun‘ where Webster sounds fully aware of that tension. The result is a track which feels personal without disappearing too far into introspection.

If there’s a slight criticism, it’s probably that the song doesn’t massively reinvent the wheel sonically. Anyone expecting a dramatic shift in direction may leave wanting a little more. Though honestly, that consistency is part of Webster’s appeal. He knows exactly who he is as an artist, and more importantly, he knows how to make people feel something.

More than anything,Just Begunleaves you intrigued about Running Round The Sun. There’s a sense this album could end up being the most complete version of Jamie Webster yet. Not louder. Not bigger. Just more open. For an artist already capable of filling huge spaces, there’s something refreshing about hearing the Scouser sound this comfortable letting a song quietly breathe.
