THE LATHUMS MAKE 2024 DEBUT WITH NEW SINGLE ‘NO DIRECTION’
SINGLE REVIEW | THE LATHUMS – NO DIRECTION by Izzy Reeve 4/5
The Lathums are finally back with a bang, diving straight in with a guitar-driven tune to declare “there’s no direction but up.” Released ahead of their biggest show to date on Friday, ‘No Direction’ is an anthem on letting go, acceptance and moving forward which begs to be performed to crowds.
Channelling the infectious energy of their live shows, this new track gives a rockier edge to what we hear on their 2023 album ‘From Nothing To A Little Bit More’. The Lathums explored a contemplative, melancholic feel in this record, with lead singer Alex Moore leading us through heartache and self-acceptance.Their first single since last October’s ‘Thoughts Of A Child’, ‘No Direction’ is refreshing with its incredibly catchy chorus hurtling us into a new, energetic era. Where, lyrically, the verses don’t quite ring as strong as the hook, Moore’s introspective musings are a great ode to navigating young adulthood and satisfyingly reflect the band’s journey.
It feels like the band are letting rip, with guitarist Scott Concepcion’s jangly guitar riffs and solo skills, Ryan Durrans driving the rhythm and Matty Murphy delivering a complex bass section. Moore builds his vocals throughout the track to reach an epic, crunchy apex. Literally showing us that we can only go up, its positivity is both a nod to The Lathums’ upbeat roots and a peek into a passionate sounding new direction. If you’re a fan of The Amazons, this track is a rousing indie-pop record for fans of their older work.
Don’t miss The Lathums headline, alongside Jake Bugg and Brooke Combe, at their homecoming celebration at Robin Park in Wigan on Friday 19th July and catch ‘No Direction’ live.
