EXCLUSIVE FILM PREMIERE FOR MANCHESTER’S BEYOND THE MUSIC OPENING NIGHT
Today, Manchester’s BEYOND THE MUSIC has announced further details of its opening night programme for Wednesday 9th October in Manchester City Centre. The global industry conference and new music festival will host an exclusive premiere and accompanying Q&A for ‘The Truth’, a lost tape film directed by multi-award winning director Teddy Nygh.
Originally commissioned as part of ‘Home Grown’, The Story of UK Hip Hop Exhibition at Manchester’s Urbis Museum, the film documents four rich decades of Black British music, journeying into the scene’s unique sound through the eyes of the pioneers and legends who built it; from Saxon Sound, Rebel MC, Rodney P and Roots Manuva, Paul Ibiza, Congo Natty and MC Det, Mystic Matt, MC Creed, Heartless Crew and So Solid!’s Mega Man, to Skepta, Chip, Wretch 32, Ghetts and Giggs. Beyond The Music’s exclusive premiere will celebrate the first public screening of the film in 15 years.
Speaking about ‘The Truth’, director Teddy Nygh says: “The Truth, is a very important film within a trilogy of documentaries I’ve made about Black British music, and a very important
film within my life. It was an opportunity to bring together some of the biggest pioneers and legends I respect, look up to and grew up with, to try and shine a light on the true story behind a lot of the incredible music in today’s scene.”
Taking place at Everyman, St John’s on 9th October, the premiere will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with Nygh, accompanied by stars of the film, Jungle and Garage legends Paul Ibiza, MC Creed, Mystic Matt and Heartless Crew. Seats are limited due to high demand, reserve your seat HERE.
‘The Truth’ premieres in partnership with Unity Radio, the original media partner of the film’s creation at Urbis back in 2009. Having learned D.I.Y radio to create original pirate material on the rooftops of East London’s Bethnal Green and Tower Hamlets with many of the pioneers documented in the film, Unity Radio later migrated North and set up firm roots; giving credence to Manchester’s airwaves and nurturing the city’s grass-roots talent to gain national recognition spanning over two decades.
Announced earlier this week, Beyond The Music’s opening night will also welcome BRIT award-winning, multi-platinum-selling artist Aitch as a Keynote speaker, joined in conversation by Dotty, host of ‘The Dotty Show’ on Apple Music 1 & Lead Cultural Curator, Black Music for Apple Music UK.
‘Dotty In conversation with Aitch’ promises to touch on a range of topics, from the importance of Manchester’s musical legacy for today’s generation of artists, Aitch’s personal experiences and challenges within the industry, to the idea of decentralising London as the home of UK rap. Reserve your space HERE.
Partnering with brand new curators for its second year, including SXSW, Manchester Pride, BBC Introducing and Secret Garden Party, Beyond The Music will welcome over 200 artists to perform for its 3 day takeover of Manchester’s Northern Quarter and Aviva Studios from 9th – 12th October 2024.
Led by its NO ARTISTS. NO MUSIC ethos, the music lineup for Beyond The Music 2024 strives to showcase a genre-spanning range of grassroots artists on a global platform. Its by-night music programme will follow upon 3 days of vital music industry conversation between some of the most important voices in music, tech and content at Aviva Studios; offering brand new artists from Manchester and beyond the chance to perform in front of some of the industry’s most powerful players.
Earlier this year, the festival issued a call out for new artists to perform at Beyond The Music 2024. As a result, 70 brand new artists have been added to this year’s festival, with 25% of the lineup dedicated to local North West-based artists, including [ K S R ], Yasmin Coe, poor effort., Moreish Idols, Cody Frost and more.
Speaking about the lineup for Beyond The Music 2024, festival founder Oli Wilson says: “Our festival is all about supporting the new wave of music talent. We haven’t booked headliners, we’ve selected this lineup with an amazing range of curators and also from several thousand new artists that applied to play this year.
From going through that process and booking the festival it seems like there is a revolution pending in music and we’re really proud to be able to give a platform to this new generation of musicians. The talent isn’t just in one genre, it’s in every genre, and we’re representing that diverse mix of music and people in the festival.”
