LIVE REVIEW | HAEVN | LONDON SHEPHERDS BUSH EMPIRE 03/10/2024 by Kevin O’Sullivan

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Wow, wow, wow! Last night Shepherds Bush Empire was blown apart (in a totally mellow way) by the atmospheric dreamlike crystal clear melodies from Dutch band Haevn.

Marijn van de Meer and Jorrit Kleijnen formed Haevn in 2015 and have steadily grown their fanbase across Europe and beyond, and judging by last night’s reception and performance, will be hitting the very big time soon. The theme of last night’s performance was their new album Wide Awake due out next week (11 October), an early start with no support allowed the band to sell limited vinyl editions and play the album in it’s entirety.

Standout moment from last night was the band being joined on stage by Neco Novellas from Mozambique. Described by Jazz Magazine: “Neco Novellas transforms the musical richness of Africa into fresh arrangements where Africa (Mozambique) touches Brazil, Europe and Jamaica,” all I can say is his singing with the Band on the eight minute version of the song Trade It For The Night  left the audience in raptures and goosebumps!

During the encore, the band were joined onstage by the clearly very proud Producer Tim Bran (London Grammar, Birdy, Aurora, Rae Morris, KT Tunstall, Halsey, The Verve, La Roux and Dreadzone) who signed Haevn after the band sent him two songs via Facebook.

Last night was one of those nights that will live long in the memory and I am sure next time they are back in the UK will be playing bigger venues. Haevn are a mind-blowingly good band!
