SINGLE REVIEW: GRAVY – FIVE TO ONE
In the past week, several bands have sought my candid opinion on their forthcoming releases which many may call brave (I’m not a monster, honest). Among them is Gravy, a band that originated from the casual jamming sessions of vocalist and guitarist Harrison Bailey and drummer Louis Tuxworth. Initially a duo, they expanded their lineup in 2022 by adding lead guitarist Ben O’Halloran and bassist Jacob Priestley. Having performed at notable Leeds venues such as Stylus, The Wardrobe, and Brudenell Social Club, these young musicians are eager to share their authentic passion for alternative music with a broader audience.
Their latest single “Five to One” is out on the 8th of November and is undeniably infectious. The track opens with a compelling drumming intro that sets the tone for the rest of the song, going into an earworm-worthy melody and a captivating chorus (which I like very much, you can chill now, you’re safe).
Lyrically, it delves into the theme of overthinking and the frustration of making the same mistakes repeatedly (we’ve all been there…). The lyrics explore the mental struggle of being trapped in one’s thoughts (and there…), leading to a cycle of errors despite the desire to break free (yes, please). This introspective narrative is sure to resonate with listeners who, like myself, have faced similar challenges. This is where the band truly excels, it’s relatable. We’ve all experienced this, and that connection is incredibly important. Everyone who knows me knows I’m a lyrics girl, if you can write a song that I can relate to then you’ve got me. Gravy, I’ve been gotten.
Musically, I particularly love the instrumental conclusion of the song, where the band seamlessly blends their intricate guitar riffs with a driving rhythm, creating this powerful and immersive soundscape that leaves a positive lasting impression. The contrast between the subdued lyrics and the high-energy instrumental parts, provide a bustling backdrop for the vocal delivery. Harrison Bailey’s vocals carry a unique charm that complements the band’s overall aesthetic and I can imagine this track will sound great played live.
While “Five to One” may not revolutionise the genre, it is a commendable effort and an example of the it done very well. The track’s infectious melody and relatable themes ensure it remains a pleasurable listen, even if it doesn’t break new ground. At just 2:39 minutes, the song is incredibly engaging and despite its introspective lyrics, it leaves you in a good mood, which I appreciate. I’m still humming it in my head which is a very good sign.
Well done, lads!
