QUICKFIRE WITH THE ULTRA VIOLETS

My names Perran and I’m the front man of the band The Ultra Violets, a 4 piece indie rock n roll group from Cornwall consisting of myself, Marc, Adam and Tyler.
How would you describe your music?
The only way I can describe it is “Indie Rock n Roll” – simple but true.
Tell us about the inspiration behind your latest release ‘By The Water’.
‘By The Water’ is a cry for the simple life that the Cornish coastline brings. Being on tour in big city’s with endless traveling life can sometimes pass you by.
This song is essentially about growing up, relationships and knowing what makes you happy
There’s always something comforting about the sounds of waves crashing on the shore, and as the final lyrics ring out go “I just wanna lay my head on your shoulder and live by the water” it paints a vivid image, it’s simple, happiness is with the one you love in the place you love.
What has been the best gig of your career so far?
I’d say when we first supported McFly at The Eden Sessions in Cornwall, it was to a sold out crowd of 7k and we had so many of our friends and family in the crowd it was so special. Also our last gig with The Libertines at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge, that was pure class.
What is the most unexpected or surprising thing you have learned about yourself through your music career?
The older I’m getting the better singer I’m getting, it always surprises me that you can get better and not worse. I think when you see all these aging rock stars that have completely lost their voices it’s a bit like ‘oh man’, but I think it’s just down to the luck of the draw, you ether get better, stay the same or get worse, init Axl Rose.
How do you feel about the musical landscape right now? Does anything need to change?
Guitar music being mainstream again would be nice. I think around 2007 it went from being mainstream to underground and it’s never really recovered, it’s hard being in a band these days for sure. But ya know, we still love it.
What is your current favourite song from someone else?
Tell you what it’s weird, it can literally be anything on any given day, but right now it’s Four Out Of Five by them cheeky little [Arctic] Monkeys. Tune.
What are you up to right now? Any upcoming gigs or projects you’re excited about?
We’re about to head out with The Libertines on their EU Tour, it’s gonna be crazy, it’s our first time overseas as a band and we’re ready.

Finally, who in the music industry would you challenge to an arm wrestle, and who would win? Why?
Oh man, I am the worst person for arm wrestling haha, always feel my arm could snap at any moment. But if I had to, it would be Sir Paul McCartney… I know he’s old, but one, I’d get to touch a Beatle, two we are both left handed so it’s fair, and three I’d win cos yeah he’s like 106 or something. No shame.
The Ultra Violets will re-join The Libertines this month across selected French dates. Follow the band on their socials linked below for all the latest updates.
