EP REVIEW | WOOM – TO SLOW YOU by Morgan Hermiston

To Slow You‘ is the second EP in WOOM‘s musical repertoire, and I hardly think it’ll be the last. The quartet infuse each track with harmonies that resonate as an embrace, providing comfort surrounding the discussed themes and topics. Released via House Anxiety, this body of work is one I imagine WOOM are insanely proud of, and one that so many people will adore. WOOM is made up of lyricist and producer Alice Barlow, who is accompanied by Lara Laeverenz, Gray Rimmer, and Isobel Risk.

An almost ominous, yet beautifully orchestrated opener begins the EP. ‘Be Brave‘ ignites the theme of haunting harmonies that are a signature in WOOM’s work. The mesmerisingly memorable and identity infusing introduction is the perfect way to start ‘To Slow You‘.

The three middle tunes were also singles from this EP. ‘Circe‘ is immaculately produced, bass riffs in the background add a depth while complementing the harmonies and vibrant vocals. Each word is heard with carefully curated clarity. Lyrics like, “all these new impressions, folding out in front of me,” present yet another prevalent theme, one of vulnerability.

Latest single, ‘Welts‘ surrounds the yearning and longing for someone. Taking on the similar approaches to previous tracks, intricately incorporated acoustic guitar extends the already intimate feel, perfectly portraying the track’s sentiments. This is a stand out single that encapsulates the crushing feeling of a seemingly one-sided attraction, “I keep turning around, but you’re facing the ground“.

Title track, ‘Slow You‘ is the longest track on the EP. This, and final tune ‘The Dance‘, build on the vulnerable theme. In ‘Slow You‘, there is a momentum that ascends throughout the track, along with wonderful wording through lyrics like, “doubt comes creeping“. The latter track talks of a dream-like state, or perhaps even living in our own heads. WOOM observe, “you noticed nothing,” and ask, “should I have screamed?

To Slow You‘ deserves all of the adoration and enamour that it will hopefully receive. Very few pieces of music resonate with me so quickly, but each song was an instant addition to my playlists. If you enjoy work from acts like Puppyteeth, Kathleen Frances, Indira Elias, or Mazzy Star, you’ll absolutely adore WOOM and their work. You can catch the four-piece performing in various UK headlines this year including London on 26th September, Edinburgh on 9th December, and Manchester on 14th December.
