GURRY WURRY COMBINES TALENTS IN NEW SINGLE CHAMPIONS BORE ME
SINGLE REVIEW | CHAMPIONS BORE ME – GURRY WURRY by Morgan Hermiston
Gurry Wurry returns with the first single from upcoming third album, “Glue“. Dave King, the talent behind this alternative identity, has collaborated with a wide range of wonderful talents to bring “Champions Bore Me” to life. This eternally captivating track was produced by Andy Monaghan [Frightened Rabbit], with Nani Porenta [Katie Gregson-Macleod] on backing vocals and Phil Wilkinson [Jake Bugg] on drums.
“Champions Bore Me” is a relatively simplistic and timeless tune, yet a future-esque feel finds its way in too. It’s been difficult to stop listening to this song, with more influences and sonically similar concepts shining through with each listen. Even with these similar notions and melodic merging, Gurry Wurry is an artist who knows how to make his music stand out and shine by itself.

Despite claiming he is “sponsored by sadness“, “Champions Bore Me” is, musically, quite uplifting, in an almost mysterious way. The smoother vocals melt beautifully with accompanying melodies. If you’re a fan of acts like Super Furries, OMD, Walt Disco, and even Brigitte Calls Me Baby, then you’ll most likely adore this tune. While I can hear so many different inspirations within the track, it’s still instantly identifiable as Gurry Wurry’s creation.
This release and overall project was supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland. This type of funding is incredibly valuable for grassroot and homegrown talents like Gurry Wurry, so this should just pile on top of the multiple reasons you’ve now got to listen to him. You can catch him play “Champions Bore Me” as well as a compilation of other tracks at the likes of Belladrum and Kelburn.
If you haven’t heard of him yet, now’s your chance to get to know him. With an impressive diverse discography already behind him, there’s a huge range of material to get familiar with before his third album is released later this year. I’m a big fan of Gurry Wurry and I’m intrigued to hear what’s next.
