INTERVIEW | CLOUD HOUSE SHARE BEST NEW SINGLE YET ‘BROKEN’

Following their 2023 breakthrough EP Still Here, Glasgow’s Cloud House address the struggle of letting go with brand new single ‘Broken’. Out now, ‘Broken‘ marks the first release of 2024 for Cloud House; a poignant break-up song with a twist, ‘Broken‘ is comfortably reminiscent of some of the best Glasgow indie bands of the past decade (Twin Atlantic, Fatherson); with equal measures of melody and anthemic sing-a-long potential, Cloud House are well positioned to break waves amongst the budding emerging indie pop scene.

Ahead of the single release, we got to know a little more about Cloud House…

Introduce yourselves

We are Conor, Jack, Morgan, Calum and Patrick, we formed a band in a hot tub, and we’ll hopefully see you at a show soon!

How would you describe your music?

Too rock for pop, too pop for rock… Or the stadium band you’ve not heard yet.

Do you have any new music coming out? Tell us all about it?

We’ve got a tune coming out on Friday 28th June called Broken. It’s a break-up song with a twist – it’s about a long distance friendship, rather than losing a lover.

It comes from a place of frustration and anxiety – wishing you could click a switch and revert back to the way things used to be, whilst trying to move on and let them know you’ll always be there for them.

We all know what it’s like when you break up with somebody – it’s awful – but what we don’t explore that much is actually how painful it can be when you realise you’re not really friends with someone any more. We don’t speak about it enough.

If you had the opportunity to write an album other than your own, which would it have be and why?

Wow. Impossible to choose and each member would have a different answer! I think we’d all be pretty happy if we’d written American Idiot.

Could you tell me which of your own songs is your favourite?

‘Broken’! Hopefully you all agree when you hear it. Live though, ‘Don’t Wanna Talk’ always goes down a storm.

What’s your current favourite song from someone else?

We’re all quite in love with the latest Bleachers album so let’s go for Modern Girl by Bleachers.

What venue is your dream to play?

Hampden, Scotland’s National Stadium. But before that, the Barras.

What would be your most controversial opinion on anything?

Keeping it in the vein of music, we think the biggest artists in the world should be helping the smaller artists as much as possible considering how difficult the grassroots scene has become and how the landscape has changed so dramatically. It’s almost impossible for bands to tour anymore without major money. Music Venue Trust talk about donating very small portions from big selling gigs. Every £1 in £100. Would be a game changer and a drop in the ocean for artists making millions.

Where is the best pint or pub for that matter in the world?

The best pint is anywhere in the Highlands of Scotland when it’s sunny, so about 3 out of 365 days of the year. Or a Guinness in Dublin. Best pub? Wherever our next venue is!

Beatles or Stones?

We’ve asked each member of the band and the result is Beatles 3-2 Stones.

Best UK festival and are you playing any festivals?

Glastonbury has to be the ultimate, and we’re just back from playing the Sound of Iona music festival which was such an amazing experience, playing to a packed room on a remote Scottish Island.
