Last night, the Mercure Hotel in Sheffield buzzed with excitement as Barry Bannan, the captain of Sheffield Wednesday, teamed with Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity for the second of a remarkable charity event to benefit the hospital. This special evening, “Barry Bannan and Friends,” brought together local personalities, dedicated fans, and community supporters to raise funds for this essential cause. Tickets sold out in just 12 hours, thanks to Sheffield Wednesday fans’ fantastic support. The night was a true celebration of Sheffield, featuring local legend and charity supporter Pete McKee, who was there along with members of Arctic Monkeys, Milburn, and Pulp. Pete created the event’s artwork and generously donated a unique canvas painting that was auctioned off during the evening.
Attendees enjoyed an impressive entertainment lineup, including live music, a meal, engaging guest speakers, and a charity auction featuring unique items and experiences. The Wednesday lineup included current Manager Danny Rohl and players Josh Windass, Liam Palmer, Callum Patterson, Lee Bullen, Daniel Pudil, John Sheridan, Ritchie Humphreys, Lee Gregory, and Pol Valentin, much to the delight of fans. All players were in high spirits, posed for selfies, and took the time to chat with everyone.
Barry said,
“I hold the charity dear to my heart and the night is just about trying to raise as much money as we can to support Sheffield Children’s. The first year you don’t really know what you’re going to get, we didn’t know what to expect and it was amazing. It’s brilliant to do it all again and give something back.”
The night started with a warm welcome and a humourous intro from Steve Bracknell, who hosted the event. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended and supported the cause. One of the highlights was the auction, where attendees could bid on exclusive memorabilia and experiences. The bidding wars were fierce, but everyone was in good spirits, as everyone knew that the proceeds were going to a worthy cause.
Over £60,000 was pledged for The Children’s Hospital Charity on the night, and the number is still climbing today. The atmosphere was one filled with camaraderie as guests mingled and danced, all united in their commitment to supporting the hospital. This event truly celebrated Sheffield’s community spirit, showcasing how collective effort can significantly impact the lives of children in need.
Speaking about the event, Steve Bracknall said,
“It’s brilliant, and I hope they ask me for a third time cos then I should get a hat trick ball. Thank you to the players for giving up their time. I know how hard it can be because I run my own team, but we’re blessed in this city to have an institution like the children’s, so we should support it.”
Bannan, a long-time supporter of the Children’s Hospital Charity, spoke passionately about his connection to the cause. His dedication and commitment to helping children in need were evident throughout the night, and his efforts were met with resounding applause from the audience.
This year’s event was particularly special as it aimed to raise funds for the new National Centre for Child Health Technology (NCCHT). “We need your help to raise £2 million towards building a new world-class research and technology centre, which will be run by Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and based at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park,” Bannan added.
The event also featured performances by local artists, including Jon McClure from Reverend and the Makers, with Steve Bracknell joining in, and the Everly Pregnant Brothers, adding a touch of entertainment to the evening. The crowd was treated to a mix of music, comedy, and dance, making it a night to remember for all who attended. The sense of community and togetherness was typical of Sheffield as everyone came together to support such an important cause.

Supporting Sheffield Children’s is personal for me as they saved my child’s life, when he had meningitis. I realise that there are children from all over the country and beyond that rely on the hospital for lifesaving care, and I hope in the end we smash last year’s total for them.”
