BIG WHEELS

Cass Ford & Lawson Doyle from Big Wheels have spent the last month in the UK as guests of Sofar Sounds. The duo have played a run of nine dates across July, including a headline show at The Shackwell Arms. They have remained dedicated to their strong work ethic and have also recorded an EP of material with Michael Smith at RYP Recordings. Additionally, they have shot a photo shoot, performed additional acoustic sessions and gigs at venues such as Camden Assembly, Dublin Castle, The Queens Head, and now here at Northern Exposure.

This Sydney-based band is gaining mass popularity with their contemporary confessional songwriting and retro style. Their singles “Chain of Fire” and “All I Ever Wanna Do” have been played on numerous radio stations worldwide, including BBC Music Introducing, Triple J Unearthed, and Boogaloo Radio in the UK. Their music is gaining national and international recognition, and they are set to continue their success into 2023.

Throughout the last five years of his professional career, Lawson Doyle has been captivating audiences with his musical talents through two successful bands: Sunflower and Port Royal. His performances on festival stages have left crowds mesmerised, while his ability to sell out venues has solidified his reputation as a top-tier musician. Doyle’s dedication and passion for his craft have undoubtedly contributed to his success in the music industry.

Singer Cass Ford possesses a captivating voice that reminds one of Stevie Nicks. Her velvety voice quality is enchanting and enthralling at the same time. Her music is embellished beautifully by her delicate harmonies, which add an extra layer of depth and beauty to Big Wheels songs. Effortlessly transitioning between genres, including rock, pop, and folk. Similar to Nicks, Fords vocal delivery showcases a blend of vulnerability and strength.

ED BENNETT

Bennett spent his childhood in a unique environment – the Westfalen barracks in Paderborn, Germany, where his father was a tank commander and his mother was a school teacher. Surrounded by fences, tanks and guns, Bennett often felt bored and lonely in this closed community. However, at the age of 11, he discovered his love for music and began playing the guitar, which became his sanctuary during those long days. He also delved into his father’s record collection, exploring the sounds of AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Peter Green, and the blues. In contrast, his mother’s collection of Northern Soul and Motown singles added a new dimension to his musical education.

During his last months in Germany, Bennett began singing. “A friend owned an Irish bar, and I sang to pay off my tab,” he says. As a 19-year-old moving to London to try his luck in music, he played at the Troubadour, the fabled club where Dylan once performed.

Bennett had to face classic music industry shenanigans while raising funds to record an album of original songs. However, he eventually signed with Marquee Records, which carries on the legacy and spirit of the legendary London rock venue. Sadly, he had to scrap every note he had previously recorded. The album ‘Worlds Between’ was ultimately produced in a few different locations, including Oxford’s Woodworm Studios, Willesden’s Fish Factory, and producer Michael Smith’s personal studio in Northwest London.

Bennett is amazed by the development of this album, as well as his own growth. He admits that it turned out to be something different from what he initially thought. The outcome surpassed his expectations by a large margin. He wrote these songs at the age of 21, and now at 24, he feels that he has outgrown them. In fact, he has already written the second album.
