BURSTING WITH NEW VITALITY AND OPTIMISM | THE LATHUMS RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘HEARTBREAKER’
SINGLE REVIEW | ‘HEARTBREAKER’ – THE LATHUMS By Keira Knox
The Lathums launch their glammed-up indie pop debut in 2025 with the effervescent dynamite of a single, ‘Heartbreaker,’ bursting with new vitality and optimism. ‘Heartbreaker’ is evidence of the unbridled excitement that Lathums infiltrates their songs with, and there’s something so joyful about that. There’s something in the water in Wigan, with a plethora of artists making their mark on 2025, the upbeat stomp of ‘Heartbreaker’, however may be the most significant so far.
The fast-paced, punchy song, which is taken from the band’s upcoming third album, ‘Matter Does Not Define,’ which is scheduled for release on March 7th, depicts a band breaking free from the bonds of uncertainty and gloom and rising to revel in the thrills of dashing rock and roll. As frontman and lyricist Alex Moore works song by song to share his personal life experiences, cheer people up when they’re feeling down, and make sure that not a single second of his music is thrown away, communication is still crucial.
The band puts abandon front and centre and creates the music for being authentic and letting go. The song ‘Heartbreaker’ possesses a joyous melody that is so uplifting; it might be one of The Lathums’ best musical compositions to date. It is expertly made, with each component flawlessly coordinating with the others. You heard it here first: Scott Concepcion is the most underrated guitarist of all time. The harmonies paired with his lively guitar solo is simply heavenly.
Speaking on the track, Alex Moore explains, “I wanted to break away from my usual style, which tends to be more introspective and fictional. Lately, people seem to have really been embracing their true selves more, with a sense of pride and confidence. So, I wanted to create a feel-good song that captures that energy, something empowering that people can sing along to and feel unstoppable. Like they’re owning who they are.”
In an effort to raise £2500 for their own Chance To See charitable fund, The Lathums concluded 2024 in front of a small, hometown audience of just 400 supporters, making sure they spread the love they receive and provide hope where it’s most needed. As expected, the band’s performance at Wigan’s Feast At The Mills gave them the chance to express gratitude to their community, release new songs, and raise money to give young people access to cultural opportunities at the right time and place.
