EADES REVEL IN TRANQUILITY AND TURMOIL WITH MOST RECENT SINGLE ‘LOOSE CLIFFS EDGE’

SINGLE REVIEW | EADES – LOOSE CLIFFS EDGE by Morgan Hermiston | 4/5

Taken from their upcoming EP, Eades share a more vulnerable side in latest single ‘Loose Cliffs Edge‘. Due to be released on August 30th, “Fight or Flight” is an EP that ventures into a variety of moods and mindsets. As the fourth single out of the five-song tracklist, it is also the most emotive. Already released are singles ‘Fade Away‘, ‘Liquid Gold‘ and ‘Constantly‘.

The independent quintet’s latest single is one that discusses an all too familiar battle with anxiety, something that frontman Harry Jordan has written about with purity and honesty. Accompanying him in Eades’ journey are lead guitarist and vocalist Tom O’Reilly and bassist Sam Wilde. Completing the band’s lineup are Dan Clifford-Smith on drums, and Tom Barr also on vocals as well as synth and percussion.

Releasing both this single, and their upcoming EP from their own independent Bam Bam Records, Eades have had full scope to explore their musical ideas. ‘Loose Cliffs Edge‘ begins with a simple approach of vocals with gentle guitar playing, the peaceful perspective appears to resemble the calm before the storm. As the song progresses, more of the band’s individual incorporations can be heard.

Lyrically, Harry Jordan has managed to capture and conceptualise the feelings and struggles he has encountered while working through anxiety. The title itself is a methodically included metaphor, providing an image to surround the mental state of mind he, and many others, have found themselves in. Jordan also discusses the meaning behind lyrics like “girl with grey in her eyes“. This specific lyric points to a conversation he had with his now wife, who he talks of as a saviour in his mental turmoil.

The simplicity and crystal clear vocals vibrantly encapsulate vulnerability and honesty. Drawing from influences like The Clash and The Velvet Underground, Eades utilise a more rock sound to accompany poignant phrases. The quintet’s way of songwriting is refreshing, allowing listeners to see a side of them that a lot of us won’t show. ‘Loose Cliffs Edge‘ is a stunning single, one I will definitely be playing on repeat.
