SINGLE REVIEW | EVAN WILLIAMS – RIDE ON by Gracie Erskine

In addition to an array of twanging word building narratives, Kent singer-songwriter Evan Williams dips his ink to paint a wild western jaunt of a bleak and bitter depiction of life in the UK with his latest single ‘Ride On‘.

So far Williams has been gaining traction on the underground scene, forming a cult following of acclaim from his galvanising live shows coupled with his sincere and cheeky singles. With slots supporting The LibertinesThe Lottery Winners and Hak Bakar, it won’t be long before the shotgun marks the beginning of an explosive career for the singer.

The track rides into chaos, a jangling and riddled summoning as Williams enters the musical saloon- Gibson as weapon. With a rollie in hand ready to observe the passive evening entertainment of the public house, the Kent narrator storms his lyrical prowess. Resonating far too close to home, with a tumultuous relationship facing the fire of everyday life, even if the choice of setting is four thousand miles and two-hundred years from modern day Kent.

“He was out there in the city eating Western takeaways“, a snide remark of surveillance that can’t help but prick the ears and bring a smirk to the listener as the verse wheels through the dust. Embargoing into an electric dismembering, Williams wails ‘Ride On’ through the chorus whilst the Johnny Cash influenced guitars two-step alongside.

Accompanying the track is a Quadrophenia meets the Wild West video. As Williams and co drive one of the first electric vehicles, the Sinclair C5, along the seafront in a juxtaposing Western twist on retro-futurism, visioned through a flickering 35mm.

With production from Jason Stafford (The Libertines and Jamie T) the track encompasses the shambolic ringing associated with both. Maybe an anarchic frenzy is just in the air at The Albion Rooms, where the track, and Williams upcoming album ‘The View From Halfway Down’ was recorded.

The eagerly awaited album is due to be released April 11th through Peter Doherty’s Strap Originals in which the label claims to sign artists with ‘style and vigour’, to that belief Evan Wiliams does subscribe.  Williams joins the cast of critically acclaimed up and coming artists TrampoleneJack JonesAndrew Cushin and obviously Mr Doherty himself, so you know you’re in safe hands.

In the calling of the cavalry Evan Williams certifies himself as the English Cowboy with colloquial narration, chaotic and cohesive fumbling there is a truly intimate pairing between that of his inter-personal wit and his third-party commentary.
