It may have been flipturn’s first time overseas, but inevitably this will be the first of many.

LIVE REVIEW | flipturn | London Moth Club 20/11/2024 by Charlie Wright

When flipturn arrived in 2017, there was no doubt that their Florida dream pop would eventually reach overseas. On 20th November 2024, they stepped off stage after three sold-out nights at Moth Club in London. Their debut UK experience was more magical than they could’ve imagined.

Dancing their way through a sea of hits (Whales), fan-favourites (Sad Disco) and new contenders (Sunlight) flipturn celebrated their upcoming album in the heart of musical culture, in a legendary venue that supports the best upcoming talent.

They may be far from home (about 4,200 miles), but it seems as though London’s been waiting with open arms for years. As fans threw merchandise to the air, adoringly screamed every word and packed the 300-capacity room to the exit, it’s no wonder the band are already planning a return next year.

The Jacksonville-quintet (Dillon Basse, Tristan Duncan, Mitch Fountain, Madeline Jarman, Devon VonBalson) have been at it for years, now gearing up for their sophomore album in 2025. their dedication has never gone unnoticed, with a group of fans being dedicated enough to attend all three nights.

With so much political discourse in the media at the moment, most recently in the UK and USA, it’s nights like this, where the culture of music can unite people internationally to a common purpose.

As our first time catching the indie outfit, first impressions were breathtaking, exhibiting a fluid performance and an incredibly well-put-together setlist, giving a fun pace to the evening. Admittedly, the avoidance of a staged encore was welcomed too (“We won’t do the whole thing of walking off stage”) and kept the euphoria of the night flowing.

The two biggest highlights included Sad Disco and August, which showed their knack for crafting massive tracks while retaining the heart of a blissful riff. Elsewhere, newbie Sunlight was a much softer affair, indicating a slightly more stripped-back approach on their upcoming album.

There was also an unexpected moment of rock n’roll where drummer Devon played drums with (and inside) the crowd. A sight to behold, that’s for sure.

Seeing the night unfold at an intimate venue, such as Moth Club, felt like a fever dream. Nestled away in Hackney, 300 capacity, in the corner of a city much larger than here. It was the crowd’s little secret, their band, in their corner of the city, owning every second.

It may have been flipturn’s first time overseas, but inevitably this will be the first of many. Jam-packed with an indie punch, gratitude and enthusiasm, you better make sure you’re at the front next time.
