GRIFF LEAVES MORE THAN JUST ‘LAST NIGHT’S MASCARA’ ON GLASGOW
LIVE REVIEW | GRIFF | GLASGOW O2 ACADEMY 08/11/2024 by Hope Simmers
From the moment Griff stepped onto the stage, it was clear that this wasn’t just an opening night—it was the start of something unforgettable, as her magnetic presence and effortless vocals of “Vertigo” earned every one of those five stars. The previous BRIT Award winner for ‘Rising Star’, proved tonight that she’s still on the rise, and it’s no surprise. After all, she’s already shared the stage with modern pop icons like Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, and if anything, this performance only reinforced that she’s destined for even greater heights.
The audience was captivated from start to finish, but the energy truly soared during crowd favourites like “Black Hole”, “Anything“, and “Miss Me Too”. And of course, the moment that stood out most was the response to “Last Night’s Mascara”—hearing the crowd sing along to a song just hours after its release was nothing short of breathtaking. After teasing a snippet of the song online during Sabrina Carpenter’s Short and Sweet Tour, fans went wild, eagerly demanding its release. The track quickly gained traction, and Griff, ever attuned to her audience, couldn’t leave them hanging— recording the final version while still on the road- delivering exactly what they’d been waiting for, opening night.
It didn’t stop there. Despite performing in stadiums and arenas throughout the year, Griff expressed a deep sense of gratitude for the intimate setting of the evening. In a heartwarming gesture, she stepped into the crowd for three songs, including Sabrina Carpenter’s “Taste” which she confessed had been stuck in her head throughout the tour. As a fan, this always blurs the lines between performer and fan, again creating an unforgettable experience.
Despite the bitter cold of a Glasgow night, I left the venue feeling unexpectedly uplifted and wrapped in warmth, a feeling that lingered long after the show ended.
