“HOPEFULLY, ALBUM TWO WILL COME OUT NEXT YEAR” | IN CONVERSATION WITH PEARCE MACCA – THE CLAUSE

Straight off the back of their frame-climbing, crowd-surfing, anything-lobbing set at this year’s YNOT Festival, Gracie Erskine caught a quick five minutes ‘In Conversation With…’ Pearce Macca, frontman of rising indie favourites The Clause.

Gracie: You had such an immense set earlier, how was it on your end?

Pearce: It was wicked, man, just a great crowd. I just couldn’t really see nothing in there; guess it’s my fault for wearing sunnies. All I could see was just bare dust coming up from the ground and a few lads climbing up the back of the tent.

Gracie: The fans definitely do have such a connection with you live; why do you think that is?

Pearce: I think we always pride ourselves on being a live band; the music we write caters to that. That’s where we learnt our craft, going out and playing as kids across pubs in Birmingham; now we’re lucky enough to do that across the UK. It’s just within the DNA of us, people can smell it, maybe.

Gracie: Do you think there’s a strong creative/music scene in Birmingham at the minute?

Pearce: There always has been, it just gets overlooked by the nature of Brummies. We’re always putting ourselves down, got such self-deprecating characteristics about us, but when you look at the other music capitals of the UK, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Glasgow, Brum always gets forgotten about. If you start digging deep there are so many artists about; the amount of talent that’s in Birmingham at the minute is nuts. We’re proud to be from there.

Gracie: How are you feeling about your upcoming tour at the back end of the year?

Pearce: If you’d had told us that we were playing some of these venues, that we are at the end of the year, when we were starting out, we’d have asked you what you were smoking. It’s a bit surreal to be playing them. Like the Ritz in Manchester is our biggest ever Manchester show, we used to dream about playing it. We are just buzzing for the tour, can’t wait to get out there.

Gracie: Now, is it too cheeky to ask about album number 2? Where are we in the works with that?

Pearce: Way too cheeky! No, I’m just joking. Me and the lads have been writing it since we wrapped on number one, that’s pretty much taken up all of my life at the minute. Hopefully, that will come out next year.

Gracie: But next year definitely? We can put that in the title? (spoiler we did)

Pearce: Maybe I said too much… It will be next year at some point. We aren’t gonna make people wait around forever. It’s close at the minute.

Gracie: And finally, if you were to design your own festival and pick a lager sponsor, who would it be?

Pearce: Wow! That’s actually a great question. I’m gonna go with Asahi.

Gracie: That’s the third time we’ve had Asahi so far.

Pearce: Ah! I thought I was being niche. I hate that, I’m gonna have to find a new beer now.
