James Marriott has unveiled his brand new single, ‘Burn Down The Disco’, marking another bold step forward for one of the UK’s most compelling and unpredictable singer-songwriters.
Arriving ahead of recent main stage performances at Reading & Leeds Festival and Electric Picnic, ‘Burn Down The Disco’ sees Marriott at his most visceral, pairing driving guitars and euphoric production with a lyric that captures the intoxicating rush of attraction tipping into something more volatile. At its centre, a perfectly timed silence follows “momentary heart attack” before the track crashes back in – a moment that perfectly captures the song’s energy. “Burn Down The Disco is the unveiling of obsession within a relationship. The deconstruction of the version of yourself you display to someone, to be replaced by unabashed, destructive yearning. I wanted to write a song which hit you hard and fast, whose lyrics matched the energy of feeling like you’re losing your mind for someone. It felt like the right teaser of the energy the live shows will take on from now on. It was also the perfect excuse to be a (terrible) superhero in a music video, having never reached these levels of anti-pop before.” – James Marriott
That energy will soon be amplified on one of James’s biggest stages yet. During his Reading Festival set, he surprised fans by announcing a headline show at O2 Academy Brixton to happen just two weeks later on September 17th, with Chloe Slater and Hannah Grae joining him for support. Tickets here.
For Marriott, Brixton represents a particularly significant milestone:
“Brixton has been my dream venue for many years now, having seen a multitude of artists there that are so so important to me (including Tyler the Creator’s first show back in the UK). Years ago it was teased that we’d support another artist there and I remember crying with a member of the band thinking about playing on that stage. To think now, a matter of years later, we’re not only playing it, but headlining it, is astoundingly special to me.”
This hive of exciting new activity comes at the end of a remarkable period of growth for Marriott. His second album, Don’t Tell The Dog reached Number 1 last summer, while January single ‘California Rain’ earned him his first Top 40 single.
His live career has developed at an equally extraordinary pace. Less than a year separated James’s first ever show from his debut appearance at Reading & Leeds, while his self-released debut album Are We There Yet? subsequently entered the UK Official Album Chart at #17. Since then, he has gone on to play some of the country’s biggest stages, including the Royal Albert Hall, alongside selling out his biggest headline shows to date.
That connection with his audience has been central to Marriott’s rise. From his debut hometown show at Brighton’s The Electric in October 2022, when a small room erupted into a communal roar, to increasingly large festival and headline stages, his live shows have become spaces where intensely private emotions are transformed into collective release.
It is a relationship that began long before the music. Making his name on YouTube, James has built an audience through chaotic pop-culture commentary, and transformed that instinct for connection into a singular musical identity. His audience now spans those who discovered him online and those who have found him through his music, united by his candid songwriting and refusal to stand still creatively.
James Marriott is entering his most exciting chapter yet.
