Northern Exposure has been a community, a movement, and most importantly, a stepping stone for emerging talent for over a decade, not merely a non-profit music magazine. My vision was simple when I initiated Northern Exposure in January 2015, to feature the incredible artists who had to be heard. What I did not anticipate was how it became a platform that launched creatives, photographers, and journalists into the industry.

YUNGBLUD (Charlie Wright / Northern Exposure)

At 23, I joined Northern Exposure with practically zero photography experience. Their open-arms approach to uplifting creatives and fostering a likeminded community of music-lovers has proven monumental in my journey. In just over a year, what was once an idea has become a full-time reality, and opened the doors to a purpose I’ve spent years searching for.

I have been fortunate to witness individuals flourish under the Northern Exposure wing year after year. Bradley Foster came to work for me as a university apprentice and went on to play a pivotal role at Sheffield International Venues.

I started with Northern Exposure in 2017 as a university placement as I was studying event management at Sheffield Hallam University. Rachel very quickly chucked me in the deep end and opened my eyes to the world of music journalism and offering me the opportunity to put my creativity in other outlets. Northern exposure has been a solid part of my life for the last 8 years helping me adapt my knowledge and skills, path my career within the events industry and create life long friendships along the way.

Today, Keira has just landed a place with Far Out, and Charlie Wright, whose fantastic photo of Yungblud was recognised in a photography competition, is another remarkable success story.

I’ve been a Northern Exposure a little over a year now, in this kind of industry I never imagined I would be taken seriously due to age and gender. NE has given me a platform to grow so much in confidence and find pride in the work that I produce. I’m now part of the editorial staff here at NE, if you had told the girl who was jumping around her bedroom when she got the confirmation email where I am today, I think she’d faint.

Their experiences illustrate how quality mentoring, practical experience, and a passion for music can create valuable opportunities. We take great pride in our team, and when they progress, we feel a strong sense of achievement.

In the two years I’ve been with NE both my technical ability and confidence in my work has tripled. In an industry dominated by men it’s amazing to be a part of something so special ran by the most hard working women in the business. Anne and Rach are my biggest supporters who have always accommodated for my mental health completely unjudged and never let me forget how valued I am, not to mention the incredible opportunities and experiences they’ve given me. I couldn’t be more grateful, honoured or blessed to be a part of the team.

Over the last two years, Northern Exposure has expanded even more, due to my new business partner, Anne. We have, together, turned Northern Exposure into a mentorship hub, rather than simply a magazine. We are a leap pad, educating young creatives on how to survive in the industry, whether that means how to act professionally at festivals, how to network with artists, or how to create content that is noticed.

Northern exposure helped drag me out from being a side lines wannabe music journalist into having the opportunity to write about a subject I adore and express my opinions championing artists who inspire me. I have met some of the hardest working music journalists and photographers in the entire industry with a purely supportive working environment, doing all of this out of a sheer passion for the art form. Northern exposure represents a stand alone independent form of music journalism a band of rebel freedom fighters in a world of social media algorithms.

It can be difficult to get into and navigate the music industry, especially when there is a lot of competition. Although what Northern Exposure does differently is provide a real-life experience. We don’t just talk about music, we live it, in the frenzied festival press rooms, at dingy and sweaty gig venues, and behind the lens of a camera.

Northern Exposure played a pivotal role in my journey to Australia. Without their support, I wouldn’t have made it this far. They helped me forge invaluable connections and friendships in Melbourne, giving me the foundation I needed to thrive. Thanks to their guidance, I’ve been able to continue my work in journalism and photography, building a career I’m truly passionate about. I truly don’t know where I’d be without them.

So, what’s next for Northern Exposure?

Our intention remains consistent: to assist new talent, provide opportunities, and ensure that individuals who work with us leave not only with valuable experience but also with a promising future. Our team is comprised solely of the best of the best. We take professionalism seriously and only retain individuals who demonstrate good manners and a strong work ethic. If someone is working for Northern Exposure and has passed our probationary period, you can be confident that they have shown potential or are already exceptional.

I absolutely adore being part of NE! The support from the team has been the survival tool I didn’t know I needed in this industry. Whenever anyone needs a second opinion or some advice or a general pick me up everyone jumps to the chance to be there. Not to mention the opportunities that have arisen from being part of the well loved mag; opening doors I didn’t know existed.

Hope Simmers

I’ve been shooting for Northern Exposure since August of last year, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside and cover shows with one of my closest friends of twelve years whilst also having amazing opportunities/photographing some of my favourite artists all provided by a wonderful team of people.
