SINGLE REVIEW | JOE GOODALL – YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN KID by Morgan Hermiston
Stirling born, but Edinburgh based singer-songwriter Joe Goodall is back with a new chapter of music. ‘You’re On Your Own Kid‘ is the first track taken from upcoming EP If It’s All For Nothing, which is set for release later this year.
If you fused together tracks from The 1975, Fatherson, and Sam Fender, you’d probably land on a sound like ‘You’re On Your Own Kid‘. This leading single is one that introduces a much more introspective side to Joe Goodall. Previous tracks like those in debut EP, “A Series of Safe Spaces” provide a sense of sentimentality. But this newest evolution demonstrates profound progress in Goodall’s songwriting and unique understanding of not only his own environment, but that of others.
Life is full of fluctuations and is tumultuous in the tales it gives us to tell, and Joe Goodall seems to be someone who is telling some of these. Despite what the title might suggest, ‘You’re On Your Own Kid‘ is a result of Joe reflecting and coming to various realisations. These become revelations and reassuring sentiments. Even in his early twenties, ‘You’re On Your Own Kid‘ is a single that evidences immense maturity in Joe’s songwriting that many older artists are yet to achieve.

“You’re just out of your depth, in over your head” is a repeated lyric, along with “you’re alright“. When everything seems up in the air, or you’re experiencing uncertainty, this is a track full of understanding undertones. This is most definitely a track I’ll keep returning to. It draws inspiration from so much music that most of us know and love, but with a twist making it distinctive to Goodall.
Joe Goodall has very quickly adopted an aspect of vivid versatility where the songwriting is personal, but portrays things that a huge audience of people will relate to, and resonate with.
You can see ‘You’re On Your Own Kid‘ and other tracks from Joe Goodall’s diverse discography at his Summer Nights headliner in August. This is the first time he’s headlined King Tut’s and this much deserved accolade is the perfect place to showcase an individual whose talent you should not ignore.
