From supporting Jamie Miller on his tour across the world to releasing her own stylish and creative dance-pop single Somebody You Never Touched this summer, ethereal rising star Maisy Kay has been paving her path to greatness, leaving sparkles in her wake. We got to ask her a few questions about the creative process behind this new breakup banger, as well as her musical inspirations and time on tour. Scroll down to hear more from Maisy Kay herself!

So, this new single, Somebody You Never Touched – what was the inspiration behind this song?

So the song was based around the concept of your skin cells completely renewing every seven years, meaning if someone had last touched you seven years ago, in theory you’d be a brand new person they never touched. I really liked this angle for a breakup record as a sort of uplifting spin on being excited for that time to pass, so you can become that new person.

What was the creative process like for this single? Do you have a favourite memory from the studio?

We honestly wrote the song over zoom! It was in 2020, when in-person sessions weren’t happening, but we still wanted to be creative. I remember the original vocal for the demo was literally just me singing into my iPhone on the voice recording app. It was so cool seeing how full the track became even though we were so limited in what we could use for it.

When did you know that songwriting was for you?

I’ve been writing from an early age, but I think when I was 10 and I wrote my first musical, I truly fell in love with the writing process and knew I wanted to pursue it further.

Who are your biggest musical inspirations?

Freddie Mercury has been my idol since I was a kid; from his vocals to his flamboyant stage presence, he truly knew how to captivate an audience. Lately I’m really loving everything Chappell Roan is doing. I think she carries some of that same flamboyance and whimsy and I’m really excited that that sort of energy is making a comeback.

You’ve just come off tour with Jamie Miller, trailing through multiple countries and continents. What are the best and worst things about touring?

I absolutely love the sense of community you find when touring. Your tour crew becomes something of a family when you’re on the road, and the bond you create is super special and unique. I miss everyone I toured with on a regular basis! I also love getting to visit new cities I wouldn’t get to go to otherwise, and meeting fans from all over the world! The worst part for me is being away from my loved ones for so long. I start to miss my friends, and it’s very hard to be apart from my cat for months at a time!

You’re hosting a dinner party and can invite 4 people, dead or alive. Who’s coming?

Freddie Mercury, Taylor Swift, and both of my granddads, who I never got to meet.
