EP REVIEW | MARCELINE – IN SPITE OF TIME by Olivia McCallum
In Spite of Time by Marceline is one of the most game changing and exciting releases to come out of Glasgow this year.
Marceline formed in 2025 and through consistent playing across Scotland have grown a reputation as one of the most exciting emerging acts Glasgow has to offer at the moment.
In a band of talented multi-instrumentalists, it is only natural that they are constantly swapping instruments. For the most part, the band consists of Ruby on bass and vocals, Austin on bass, guitar and vocals, Fernando and Max on electric and acoustic guitar and finally Lewis on drums/percussion. Every member is incredibly proficient in their instruments, I was left in awe after my first listen of the EP.

‘ILL’ is the opening song on the release. I am particularly in love with Lewis’s drums and all of the guitars on this track. Both perfectly compliment each other while emphasising the desperation in the vocals. I love the way the entire song builds to an intensely beautiful crescendo.
Mongrels is stunningly haunting. With it’s whispered verses and ghostly vocals ringing in the background, I felt this track in particular was the most reminiscent of one of the band’s top influences, Radiohead. Specifically the album Ok, Computer.
It is hard to put into words how sonically beautiful ‘Out Of Touch’ is. Everything about this song compliments and contrasts so perfectly making it one of my favourite tracks of 2026.
‘Strange Feeling’ was the band’s debut single and is the final song on the EP. The track opens with a softer Latin-influenced verse before utter chaos takes over. There’s so much going on in just this one track. The layers upon layers of guitar and bass, provided by the ever talented Ruby, Max, Fernando and Austin, with countless effects building underneath Ruby’s achingly stunning vocals.
In Spite of Time is art rock perfection. The entire EP feels like an out of body experience. I am obsessed with everything about it. Everything is so layered and perfectly compliments each other. I can only begin to imagine the seemingly countless hours spent in the studio to create this EP. It’s the perfect combination of all their influences plus their own entirely unique take creating a flawless debut release bound to leave you stunned.
For fans of Radiohead, Black Midi and Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, In Spite of Time is an essential addition to your everyday rotation.
