SINGLE REVIEW | MEGAN BLACK – YOU HAVE A WAY by Anne Kelly
On Friday, award-winning Scottish “rock goddess” Megan Black finally released her brand new single ‘You Have A Way’. Set in a fictional 1970’s timeline, the track sequels from previously released ‘Clementine‘, taking place 6 years since the protagonist fell in love with her best friend. Now aged 26, ‘You Have A Way’ takes Megan’s character into 1974 where she finds herself chained to a loveless, bitter marriage.
Starting with raw acapella, the track highlights a haunting vulnerability in Black’s delivery. Trading her signature blues-rock for a folk-inspired aesthetic, it evokes a Mazzy Star-esque atmosphere. Despite the track’s distant themes, the elements marry perfectly; the sound never turns bitter, remaining dreamy and romantic. As the layers build, the verses remain intimate before the chorus unleashes her powerhouse range. All tied together by rich, unifying harmonies, especially with her “husband”, Shaz aka Thundermoon on the duel vocals, this lush atmosphere only serves to make the bittersweet lyricism feel even more poignant.

Compared to her previous work, ‘You Have A Way’ marks a significant turning point for Megan Black. This release feels like a genuine game-changer, signalling a creative evolution will only take Megan to new heights. Having followed her for years, I’m already captivated by the album’s concept and eager to see how this narrative arc unfolds in future releases.
Don’t just take my word for it,‘You Have A Way’ is out now and has even been crowned BBC Introducing Scotland ‘Track of The Week’ – Listen Here.
