NATALIE SHAY ‘HATES TO SAY IT’, IT’S OVER…NOT! IN BRAND NEW DOUBLE A SIDE | NORTHERN EXPOSURE

NATALIE SHAY ‘HATES TO SAY IT’, IT’S OVER…NOT! IN BRAND NEW DOUBLE A SIDE

SINGLE REVIEW | NATALIE SHAY – LOVE YOU TO DEATH/HATE TO SAY IT by Georgina Daniels

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Natalie Shay is totally slaying again as she launches her new era on what has so far been a whistle-stop tour for this super talented songstress hailing from lovely ol’ North London. Weaving her signature blend of vulnerable yet empowering tunes, she delivers a double whammy with “Love You To Death and “Hate To Say It” – tracks that truly demand to be heard live.

Known for her boundless energy and confidence, Natalie serves up a delicious brand of pop that draws inspiration from The 1975, Japanese House, Lorde, and even Florence + The Machine in places. “Love You To Death” is definitely a track for the Swifties or Avril Lavigne fans! All the best songwriting tricks are on display: her anthemic lines – “I’ve been trying to tell you, I’ll be your muse, I’d kill for you, or I could love you to death” – are delivered over seamlessly produced hooks and drum beats, making the track tight and incredibly fresh. It’s the kind of song you’d expect to hear in a cool coming-of-age TV show – one that stays with you through life’s challenges. The interludes featuring snippets of phone calls or WhatsApp notes are relatable, drawing the listener even closer to Shay’s world.

“Hate To Say It” is the more muted of the two, with its HAIM-inspired groovy bass, echoey vocals, and another incredibly catchy chorus. It feels a little more intimate, reflecting a bittersweet acceptance of moving on from things that no longer serve you. Empowering yet tinged with resentment – as she repeats “I miss you” before immediately countering with “I’m breathing now you’re gone” – Shay displays a multitude of emotions, adding depth and a darker, sardonic edge to the conversational title.
