SINGLE REVIEW | NELL MESCAL – ‘THIN’ By Keira Knox

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Following a string of sold-out US shows and intimate UK performances, Nell Mescal balances on the edge of stardom. Mescal has crafted the art of meaningful lyricism, with ‘Thin’ she hits home with deep personal struggle, putting her insecurities at the forefront.

The song delves deep into the perception body image and the emotional toll it may take on self-worth. Before releasing the sombre demo, the singer teased live and social media snippets of the track, much to the joy of her eager fans. It’s quickly rose to prominence amongst a devoted fanbase.

Raw vulnerability sits at the forefront of this track. Ethereal vocals convey an even deeper sense of hurt and anguish. Mescal’s track is incredibly candid which provides young girls an outlet to confide, and it beautifully expresses the female anguish surrounding body image. ‘Thin’ gives voice to people who can’t communicate their hurt and frustration.

“Thin is about body image and equating what you look like to what your worth is when it comes to love. It was a really difficult song to write and to confront, and comes from all my darkest and most untrue thoughts about myself,” Nell Mescal states. “The ultimate message of the song and what I hope people get from listening to it is that these thoughts aren’t true, but that doesn’t make the emotions any less real and that you are enough as you are.”
