NOSTALGIA CALLS THE NEW AS THROWING MUSES KICK OFF UK/EUROPE TOUR IN EDINBURGH
Throwing Muses (Mairi Lynch/Northern Exposure)
LIVE REVIEW | THROWING MUSES | LA BELLE ANGELE, EDINBURGH | 20th August 2025 by Mairi Lynch
Throwing Muses stormed La Belle in Edinburgh last night. From their first song the band had the audience in awe and the venue was absolutely packed, every inch of space filled with the huge crowd. The atmosphere was great with people leaning forward, singing along and beaming with joy.
Emerging from the vibrant 1980s Boston music scene, Throwing Muses carved a unique space for themselves with their unconventional and captivating sound. First led by step-sisters Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly (Breeders, Belly) the band defied easy categorisation, blending elements of alternative rock, post-punk, and folk into a dissonant yet melodic tapestry. Releasing their latest album Moonlight Concessions back in March, their Edinburgh show marks the beginning of an extensive UK and European tour to come.
The band delivered a set that was both powerful and textured. The cello playing added a unique new layer to the sound, melting against alongside Hersh’s vocals. The guitar tones felt sharp and crisp, with solos that left the crowd speechless. But at the heartbeat of it all, drummer moved with incredible speed and precision, bringing raw energy to every track.
For those craving a night of something new laced with a hefty dose of nostalgia, then a date with Throwing Muses is a must.
