POPPY WIZARD’S DEBUT GRUNGEGAZE EP IS DREAMY-SCREAMY GOODNESS
EP REVIEW | POPPY WIZARD – HOLY SPIRIT GANG by Shona Hoey
As someone relatively new to the world of heavier music, German grassroots sensation Poppy Wizard’s new EP ‘Holy Spirit Gang’ is absolute perfection. While a little jarring at the start, I couldn’t help but smile and bob my head when the music took over from spoken word in the first track H.S.G. It somehow evokes the feeling of being exhausted in a warehouse at 3am after a heavy night and then hits you in the face with some half-screamed lyrics to wake you up and start dancing again. On the first listen, I wrote in my notes “what genre is this?” because the EP bounces from grunge to wavy; it feels like a dreamy yet heavier, more palatable pop-punk for both sides of that genre divide.
You can feel the energy these long-time friends put into their writing, and I can only imagine how insane this would sound live. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I pushed play, but the journey this EP takes you on is beautiful as it walks the fence of dreamy-screamy grungegaze goodness – a perfect way to spend a rainy bank holiday!
My only complaint is that it’s not a full album, but this 14 min 23 sec EP is a wonderful snapshot of more to come later this year; Poppy Wizard’s ‘Holy Spirit Gang‘ simply will leave you begging for more.
Definitely worth a follow on socials on the off chance you’re in Germany when they’re performing, or if they decide to grace the UK with their presence on their small November tour (details yet to be announced).
