Introduce yourself….

Hello!

I’m Jake from Lost in Vancouver.

We’re a four-piece indie rock band from Edinburgh, Scotland. Alongside myself we’ve got Scott Keating on the bass, Charlie Lightowler on guitar, and Callum Davidson on the drums and backing vocals.

How would you describe your music?

I’d say it’s full of different flavours! Our inspirations include a range of early 2000s indie bands; the indie sleaze sound if you like haha, but there are definitely influences from genres like punk, alt-rock and pop too. I’d say if artists like The Strokes, Kings of Leon, and The Killers tick your boxes then I’m pretty confident the odds are in our favour that you’ll enjoy our sound. But aye the tunes are vibrant, melodically infectious, and full of energy, if I do say so myself haha.

Do you have any new music coming out?

We certainly do and we’re buzzing to get this one out. It’s been in the locker for the best part of two years and the reaction we’ve had playing it live recently has highlighted to us that it’s a certified banger for sure, and most importantly my Nana loves it- that’s even after me forcing her to listen to it hundreds of times hahaha.

But yeah the tune’s called ‘Voicemail’ and it’s out on the 7th of August.

What’s your favourite song you have written/released?

Oh man… that’s a difficult one. I love them all equally, even the older tracks we still have up on the SoundCloud, but I think ‘Rose in Retrospect’ might just have one foot over the line. Lyrically, it’s something I’m really proud of and when we play it live it’s the one I always look most forward to playing – the chorus hits like a freight train.

What’s your current favourite song from someone else?

Balancing Act – She Plays The Theremin.

Genuinely my favourite band at the moment, they’re absolutely phenomenal and they’ve taught me what a theremin is because I didn’t have a clue beforehand haha. Everything they’ve released so far has been absolutely top-class. Honestly, they could probably sneeze into a mic right now, record it and release that as a tune and no doubt it would end up sounding absolutely unreal.

If you had the opportunity to write an album other than one of your own, which would it be and why?

You lot at Northern Exposure are full of the really hard questions hahaha. Am I allowed to cheat here? I’ve got a solid tie just now and it’s between

Kings of Leon – Aha Shake Heartbreak

The Killers – Sam’s Town

Both of those albums are staples from my childhood and I still listen to them both on repeat to this day. Those albums definitely influenced and formed the foundations for the type of music I love making.

Stone Roses or The Smiths?

Yeah, it’s got to be The Smiths. Played at Belladrum with a side project on the same year that Johnny Marr was playing, and then not getting the chance to meet him, will probably haunt me to my grave.

What would be your most controversial opinion on anything?

I love a good conspiracy theory and I’m absolutely convinced that the Mandela effect is 100% real. The Monopoly man absolutely did used to have a monocle and no one can convince me otherwise.

Oh, and Stagecoach are run by lizards in human skin suits.

Best pint in the world?

A pint of Pinot Noir.

Dream venue to play?

I’d probably say Royal Albert Hall, it is absolutely stunning and is definitely on the dream list.

Any gigs/festivals coming up?

Nothing in the immediate future but we do have a couple of Scottish headline dates planned for later in the year and we’re in talks for finally leaving home soil and venturing down south to play in England in the new year which we’re pretty excited about.

Future plans?

This year we’re pretty happy with what we’ve done since coming back from our long hiatus, and we’ll probably squeeze one more release in for this year, but right now the majority of our planning is in advance for next year. Throughout the time the band wasn’t active I’d keep my eye on some of the content we had already released and I’d see the occasional comment on videos and social media where people were quite unhappy that it didn’t look like the band was going to continue, so I feel like we owe those people, and to repay them as best we can we’re gonna make sure we release as much music as we can and play to as many places physically possible.

If a tree falls and nobody is around, does it make a sound?
