REVIEW: JACK JONES – “PEACHES OUT OF REACH”

I have been a fan of Jack Jones and his band Trampolene for many years, in fact, since the beginning of NE. As times gone on I’ve realised that songwriters who craft their music sincerely from the heart tend to draw my attention the most, and it is in this authenticity where my deepest respect for Jack lies. Known for his versatility, Jones effortlessly switches between spoken word poetry and music, which has always broadened his artistic reach. His contributions, whether with the band Trampolene or as a solo artist, draw from personal and cultural experiences, enriching the cultural landscape and making his work both relatable and impactful. Jack has a new self titled album on Strap Originals coming out on Friday, September 20th with earlier singles, “Breathe” and “Who Let The Bass Pump Through The Floor,” receiving numerous plays on BBC6 Music and Radio X.

Jack Jones has always been an intriguing figure to me, masterfully merging the realms of poetry and music into a distinctive and enthralling artistic fusion. This recent single stands out to me for its nostalgic references, such as Freddo bars costing ten pence, the delight of playing on a Game Boy, or the youthful fun of waterslides – those were the days, indeed. This use of metaphors and literary techniques is masterfully executed, transporting me to another time and place, I may not know Gillian Fox or have not experienced Scotty getting his todger out, but I definitely have similar stories ha. It’s very cleverly done and I find myself longing for those simpler times.

“Jack’s gentle, yet impactful delivery in segments of his latest single “Peaches Out Of Reach” affirms Jack as one of Britain’s most outstanding lyricists in recent times.”

Touching upon universal human experiences is again something Jack excels at, which, when transformed into lyrics, resonate deeply with me. This song takes you on a journey into adulthood and the self doubt that comes along with that. It reflects on those among us who have battled addictions and have now transformed into “health gurus”, experiencing moments of contemplation about the astonishing changes in our lives. I’m confident that if you, like me, are in your late thirties or forties, a lot of themes in this track will resonate with you as well. Jones’s prowess in storytelling is so evident in this track, weaving a narrative-rich song that really gets you thinking. I truly believe that aside from “My Bourgeoisie Girl” (Jack, if you’re reading this, you’re aware of my love for that track!), this single ranks among my top favourites that Jack has written. The music carries a dreamlike quality that compels me to dance and spin in a festival field, showcasing the song’s cleverness. It has the power to make you reflect on life one moment and the next, urge you to dance and immerse yourself in its rhythm. It also instils in me a strong sense of gratitude, which is honestly invaluable.

The video for ‘Peaches Out Of Reach’ was shot over Glastonbury weekend by Barnaby Fairley, who also directed the videos for previous singles. Watch it here:
