RICHARD ASHCROFT LIVE IN STEVENAGE: THE TIMELESS VOICE OF BRITISH MUSIC

Richard Ashcroft has always refused to go along for the ride on whatever is the current fad. From his teenage years as lead singer of The Verve to his award winning solo years, he has crafted music that’s raw, passionate, and hugely autobiographical. His ability to combine profundity of thought with sweeping melody has established him as one of British music’s most compelling figures.

Ashcroft was born in Wigan in 1971, and he suffered an early blast of tragedy when his father died when he was 11 years old. Melancholy invaded his lyrics when he grew older, giving them an undertone of universality that was not within the scope of anything that could be done within Britpop. The Verve, which formed in the early 90s, was always slightly more grand, psychedelic-sounding than most of its rivals. Its classic album Urban Hymns propelled them to global superstardom, Bitter Sweet Symphony and The Drugs Don’t Work became household anthems. Ashcroft’s skill in taking pain that was very specific to himself and translating it into something universal made him an industry veteran’s favourite.

But as is true of great groups, though, The Verve’s success was plagued by conflict. During his short reformation, Ashcroft set out on his own as a solo artist to equal success, demonstrating that his genius was not dependent on partnership. His debut album, Alone With Everybody, was as cinematic as much of his earlier work, but was exploring new sound terrain. He’s continued to get better year by year, from minimalist Keys to the World to experimental United Nations of Sound. Throughout it all, though, has been that trademark sincerity his lyrics never affected, his voice never flagging in passion.

Ashcroft is never backward in coming forward about his state of mind, never reserved about recording life’s highs and lows. Natural instincts for coping and for translating turmoil in his head into song have established him as one of his era’s most honoured writers. Noel Gallagher has described him as “a genius,” and Coldplay’s Chris Martin as “best singer in world.” Endorsement by colleagues assures his position, but it is raw emotion in his voice that has kept his public’s interest.
It’s what distinguishes Ashcroft that he has an ability to connect listeners on an inherently human level. His hits aren’t just hook-driven, they’re about moving you. His voice, alone, is unique, it’s raw, it’s soulful, and has an ability to evoke real emotion. From delivering the anthemic sound of Bitter Sweet Symphony or the stripped-back intimacy of The Drugs Don’t Work, his songs don’t just entertain, but speak to you, as well. That’s why his songs pass the test of time decades on from when he released them.

Now, though, in 2025, Ashcroft is showing that he still has plenty to deliver. His most recent album Lover, which drops in May, is his biggest studio effort in years. His supporters eagerly await whether it keeps up his run of more pensive material or takes him in fresh directions sonically. He also recently signed on to support on the Oasis reunion tour, one of this year’s most hotly anticipated spectacles for lucky souls to witness these groups build an era back in the day Adding to the momentum, Ashcroft’s first three solo albums, Alone With Everybody, Human Conditions, and Keys to the World, will be reissued on vinyl next June, a testament to his enduring legacy. Keys to the World makes its vinyl debut with this release, reinforcing the lasting impact of his music. Even after years in the industry, his songs still resonate, proving his staying power in British music. Others ebb and flow, determined solely by fashions of an era. There are, however, like Richard Ashcroft, whose songs surpass a time, always-relevant, always-resonant. His songs continue to soundtrack lives, proof that great art is not time-stamped.
