ROUNDHAY FESTIVAL | EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Pitbull

With less than 2 weeks to go until the return of live music to Leeds iconic Roundhay Park, here’s everything you need to know before the brand new Roundhay Festival

Roundhay Festival emerges from the team behind the success of BST Hyde Park, London. The 13-year tenure of BST and it’s renowned credibility of world class headliner, ‘mini-city’ vibe and all round good time, ensures that Leeds is in safe hands for the summer it deserves.

The 700-acre park will host nearly 70,000 fans a day across the weekend of July 3rd-6th, so get your suncream and your wellies (you never know), cause this year the party is up North. Roundhay Park’s natural amphitheatre shape lends itself to live music, guaranteeing a great view from wherever you stand.

American icon and professional sunglasses king, Pitbull, is set to headline the opening night. Expect an obscene amount of bald caps (like the Otley Run has started a new route), more ties than your local charity shop, but most of all – a bloody good time. Pitbull has more bangers under his belt than sausage and mash day in Primary, with hits such as ‘Give Me Everything’, ‘Timber’ and ‘Fireball’ you’re guaranteed a party. And ‘Watcha Say’? That’s after singer and body rocker Jason Derulo has charmed the crowd with his nostalgia trip set. Or is that after Tinie Tempah has taken everyone back to a Premier League season 10 years ago with ‘Written In The Stars’. Either way, it’s a lineup you don’t want to miss.

Not feeling the party? Don’t worry, Scottish singer songwriter Lewis Capaldi is sure to get you in your feels with his Saturday headline slot. Whilst your guaranteed heartbreak anthems with fan favourites ‘Someone You Loved’ and ‘Before You Go’, it should all be broken up intermittently by the Scotsman’s sharp tongue and comedic wit that catapulted him into success. Capaldi’s Saturday show is set to be his biggest festival headline show to date, with support coming in from sad boy superstar Conan Gray and rising indie success Nieve Ella joining the lineup too.

Sunday evening concludes on a calmer note, with an All Things Orchestral day with the Halle Orchestra and multi-platinum artist Alfie Boe OBE, has been revealed as a special guest at the extraordinary classical concert

This is not the park’s first rodeo, Roundhay Park holds a rich musical history; with Michael JacksonU2 and Madonna all taking stage at one of Leeds most picturesque landscapes through the years. And if it’s good enough for Madonna, it’s good enough for us Northern muckers. Leeds is often overlooked as a ‘music city’, with Manchester across the Pennines and Sheffield just below; the Northern powerhouse rarely gets a chance to make its name. The performances at Roundhay have never been consistent and it’s return to live music is more than just a day out. The introduction of Roundhay Festival provides Leeds with further opportunity to showcase its creativity and impact.

Whether you’re feeling like Mr Worldwide, wallowing self pity or embracing a bit of classical, it’s a star-studded weekend back where live music belongs.
