SINGLE REVIEW | SAM FENDER – PEOPLE WATCHING By Keira Knox

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Sam Fender has today released the title track to his upcoming third album ‘People Watching’. Following months of teasers, this highly anticipated track comes as a relief to his fanbase, who have waited for the track on tenterhooks since its live debut back in August at Plymouth Pavillions.

With a smooth production, a mournful yet driving pace, emotive piano notes, and of course powerful saxophone riffs, the new song is a five-minute anthem from the Geordie icon. ‘People Watching’ recounts Fender’s visit to his late friend Annie Orwin at a nursing facility and was written in her tribute. In an Instagram post last week, he shared the story behind the song, stating that it was about someone who was “like a surrogate mother to me and passed away last November.”

‘People Watching’ skilfully combines intensely personal tales with universal problems that impact a larger audience. This song has an astounding range of emotions and perspectives. ‘People Watching’ runs with unadulterated emotion, full of introspection and melancholy, rage and disappointment, loss and longing.

Sam Fender’s ability to deliver vivid stories has always been his greatest attribute. He is among the best songwriters of our time due to his prolific and deeply emotional tracks. His lyrics are as significant and timely as ever. He has continuously shown a keen aptitude for transporting listeners to a setting and creating mental worlds with just his words throughout his musical career.

‘People Watching’s’ lyrical depictions make it easy to lose yourself in your thoughts while you gaze out the window at the passing scenery. There is a noticeable, albeit non-derivative, The War On Drugs influence here, giving the distinctive country rock sound of Fender an edge in which we haven’t previously seen.

The timing of ‘People Watching’ couldn’t be more ideal. It ushers in a new era of Fender’s music and offers even another source of solace. The lyrical advice is intended for people who are adrift in our dark environment. Fender’s third album is destined to be another world-beater if this is only the beginning of what he has in store.
