Last week, Sam Ryder hit Exeter’s Cavern for two incredibly intimate shows shortly before he plays a massive gig at Wembley Arena. The shows were part of the launch of Ryder’s brand new album Heartlands, which was released just days before.
“At least I know none of you are liars!” exclaims Sam Ryder, as he told an anecdote from when he last played at Exeter’s infamous Cavern – where he supported a band in front of absolutely no-one. This run of shows proves to so many people that no matter how big you may be, playing smaller, intimate shows is a way to truly connect with fans. Ryder even went as far as to meet every single person who attended the show, proving his class and how genuine he is. Joking about how he sounds like a ‘Radio 4 presenter’ while in between songs, and his tea breaks, is a true show of how the fame hasn’t gone to his head.
Just before the end of his set, with hit songs ‘More’ and *that* incredible Eurovision runner-up song ‘Space Man’ , he spoke about how proud he feels to be an independent artist – about how shows such as this one are the reason he feels independency in the music industry can truly be a beautiful thing. His album launch was going up against some heavyweights in the industry – and just came shy of the top 10.
