‘JODI SAID’ – KATIE NICOLL 10/04/2024 | By Corin McDonald

Forget your morning cuppa, this is the caffeine boost you need to start your day: Katie Nicoll’s most recent single Jodi Said’ truly is a shot of espresso in the form of an incredible song. The Dundee based pop singer/songwriter has gone from strength to strength, charming crowds all over Scotland with her distinctive voice and unforgettable talent. Having received airplay on BBC Introducing and BBC Radio 1 and then entitled Go Radio’s ‘Artist of the Week’ on their Fresh Artist Friday show, it is clear that Katie’s new track is worth a listen.

This track ultimately encaptures the feeling of an intense, overwhelming crush that can feel like being addicted to someone that you probably shouldn’t be. ‘Jodi Said’ was chosen as track of the week on BBC Scotland and when being interviewed, Katie reveals how the song details how her friend (Jodi) attempted to deter her from getting to know this guy because “she thinks he’s a sleaze and he is so much older”. Nicoll cleverly discusses the trials of trusting your friend’s judgement or listening to your heart when juggling strong feelings; something that many people can relate to.

The soft beginning lures the listener in and gradually ramps up the liveliness switching from a delicate verse into an infectious, energetic chorus. Embodying the pure sound of pop, this irresistibly catchy refrain will be circling your head for days after and truly is the perfect song to dance around your room to. Within the second verse, Katie uses a powerful vocal cry to emphasise the passion in her words and really showcases her phenomenal vocal versatility. Layers of backing vocals and stacked harmonies create such a warm depth to the track that is driven by the drums that inject so much enthusiasm into this song.

Her storytelling lyrics perfectly sum up the all consuming feelings of overthinking “I’ll hang on to things I said that made him laugh and hope that I made some kind of impression tonight”; highlighting her vulnerability and eagerness to please. The slick, witty lyrics paint such a
vivid picture and skillfully draw the listeners in with small, simplistic details like the day of the week. Katie’s bright and bubbly personality is beautifully conveyed through this fun, spirited song further making this song appealing to listen to. In addition, being a graphic design student, the artwork for the single cover was created by the multi-talented popstar – is there anything this girl can’t do?
