SLOW READERS CLUB SMOTHER CAUTIONARY TALES OF HOLLOW HEDONISM WITH AN ELECTRO POP CLOUDBURST ON NEW SINGLE ‘BOY SO BLUE’
Manchester’s Slow Readers Club have released their latest single, ‘Boy So Blue’. A captivating blend of electronic euphoria and lyrical sorrow, the track sets the stage for their upcoming seventh studio album, Out Of A Dream, due in March.
Completing a series of rearranged dates this month, including performances at The Academy in Dublin (7 Feb) and Belfast’s Limelight (8 Feb), the band has also announced a series of ten UK-wide album launch shows. These intimate, full-band performances will take place in cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, London, and Nottingham, starting at The Met in Bury on 1 March 2025.
The band’s first major live announcement for the summer is a homecoming date alongside Elbow at the 8,000-capacity Castlefield Arena. Having previously shared the stage with James and Pixies, the band’s dedicated fanbase is well aware of their main stage credentials.
Singer and lyricist Aaron Starkie explains the inspiration behind ‘Boy So Blue‘:
“The electronic element of our sound evolves from song to song and album to album. We’ve always been drawn to the sounds of early Depeche Mode, Erasure, New Order, and LCD Soundsystem, so we decided to put those influences front and centre. Although it’s a big, joyous dance track, it’s about hiding deep emotional pain and trauma and how hedonistic coping mechanisms, like drugs, alcohol, and womanizing, are just temporary distractions. They ultimately fuel a self-destructive cycle. There’s a deliberate contrast between the euphoria of the music and the melancholy of the lyrics, capturing the subject’s duality of light and darkness.”
The Slow Readers Club ended 2024 with a series of sold out UK wide dates, including a memorable homecoming at the ornate O2 Ritz, Manchester. They have also played historic, capacity shows at Manchester O2 Apollo and the Albert Hall. With further live announcements to come for 2025, all confirmed upcoming UK live dates are as follows:
- Sat 1 March – Bury, The Met
- Sun 2 March – Manchester, Gorilla
- Fri 14 March – Bury, The Met – SOLD OUT
- Sat 15 March – Liverpool, Jacaranda Baltic
- Sun 16 March – Leeds, Headrow House – two performances
- Thu 20 March – London, Rough Trade East
- Fri 21 March – Kingston, Prizm
- Sat 22 March – Nottingham, Rough Trade – two performances
- Wed 2 July – Manchester, Castlefield Arena w/Elbow
Created in collaboration with producer Joe Cross (Courteeners), Out Of A Dream is described by the band as “a collection of abstract visions that question reality, celebrate love, and long for connection.” The album follows 2023’s Knowledge Freedom Power, which secured the band’s fourth Top 40 Official UK Album Chart position.
