As Everything Unfolds (Ollie Hayman/Northern Exposure)

As Everything Unfolds

How was your first Slam Dunk show of the weekend, did you have fun?

Charlie: Yeah, I used to come to Slam Dunk when I was a teenager, so it’s kind of a cool and nostalgic moment for me.

Jamie: Yeah, I’ve been to ‘North, but I’ve not been to ‘South until now.

Charlie: George was the same. George was like “I always go to North,” and I’m like “that makes no sense, but fair enough”.

How was your rise from being quite an unknown band to playing in front of thousands of people? For example, you supported Skindred – what does that rise feel like?

Charlie: Not real. It’s very surreal going from being this band of just a bunch of friends that met on some shitty fucking website to now playing Wembley. Like, we were just about to go on stage and we were like “what the fuck?”

Jamie: The Wembley show was the most surreal, ‘cause we’re just outside of London so Wembley is like the big local venue. We’d always go when we were younger, to all the bigger bands there, so playing on stage was crazy.

Ultraviolet was a great success here. It was nominated for album of the year. What’s next for you guys as a band?

Charlie: We’re in the process of writing. We’ve got a couple of festivals in Europe. Some headlining Germany shows. We have got some stuff for the end of the year, but it’s not announced yet. But it is cool. Very excited. But we are mainly writing.

Charlie, you just released The Echoes of Disparity with Future Palace. What’s the song about, and what drove you to be a part of it?

Charlie: Maria who is the vocalist for Future Palace, we’d never actually met in real life, we always just chatted on Instagram. We always had very similar experiences, so I think that’s why she came to me in the process and said “look, I’ve written this song that’s focused around being a woman in the music industry, and how difficult it can be to be objectified and bla bla bla”, and I was like “yeah, that sounds fucking sick.” Then she sent me the track, and I was like “oh, yeah, this is angry, I love it.” So, it was a lot of fun to do something with the band. I like Future Palace as well, it’s a band that I admire. They’re kind of our European counterpart, so all the fans were like “oh my God, it’s blowing my mind!” So yeah, it was a lot of fun!

What’s the best show that you’ve ever played?

Charlie: … Wembley. No, I mean, I did have a great time at Wembley, but there was also one of the intimate dates … the Nottingham show, that was so much fun. It’s really weird what constitutes a good show and sometimes you can’t explain it.

Jamie: I was gonna say the Rock For People festival. That was kind of our first European festival and it was a lovely day, really hot, and loads of people. There was just something special about it. To me, that’s one of my favorites that sticks out to me.

Charlie: Yeah, it sticks out for me as well. Like I said, there’s no final reason. You can have a good show but it doesn’t always make it the best show. Sometimes you just get a vibe.

Jamie: Our last London headline was really good.

Charlie: Yeah, that was really good too.

What are your influences in music?

Charlie: You know what, that’s such a deep fucking question for us. Adam loves Bryan Adams and 80’s rock. John is really into EDM and stuff like that, and George just likes everything. I think George is what makes us more interesting writing-wise. Yeah, we have such a wide spectrum.

Where does your name come from?

Jamie: I think It was the old guitarist, Paton. The band was previously named something else, something really crap. Paton hated that name, so George was like “come up with something better then,” and they changed it to As Everything Unfolds, and they were like “meh, it’s not bad, it works.”

What’s your favorite song you’ve ever written?

Charlie: I like On The Inside. It’s always good vibes and everyone knows that one. I also like playing Slow Down though.

As Everything Unfolds sophomore album Ultraviolet is OUT NOW and they are currently gearing up for a festival filled summer across Europe. For all the details, including dates for their November support shows with Bury Tomorrow head to their website https://www.aseverythingunfolds.com/
