SUM 41 TEASE FURTHER TASTER OF CONCLUSIVE ALBUM WITH BRAND NEW SINGLE ‘WAITING ON A TWIST OF FATE’
SUM 41 SET TO RELEASE ONE LAST ALBUM | BY CRAIG HARSTON
Following on from singles ‘Rise Up‘ and ‘Landmines‘, which will appear on the Heaven (pop punk) and Hell (metal) sides of Sum 41’s forthcoming – and final – double album, respectively, third single ‘Waiting On A Twist Of Fate‘ is due to open Heaven, and it’s a pop punk banger!
The song finds the Canadian pop punk veterans firing on all cylinders, taking on an almost melodic hardcore approach. With thundering drums from Frank Zummo whilst backing up some crunchy punk riffs from Dave Baksh and Tom Thacker before Deryck Whibley’s shouty vocals somehow kick the song into an even higher gear that doesn’t let up for the full 2 minutes and 46 seconds!
Once it hits the chorus which see’s Whibley lamenting on how life won’t wait and you can’t let the past hold you back “And now I’m done with lies, and everything that you’ve got to say; I can’t spend my life, just waiting on a twist of fate”, it fully feels like a call-back to the Sum 41 of old and wouldn’t feel out of place on 2002’s ‘Does The Look Infected?‘ or 2007’s underrated ‘Underclass Hero‘. It even features a face-melting guitar solo from Baksh over a super-fast punk riff which never gets old. And in true Sum 41 fashion, they still can’t help going a little bit metal in the closing moments, wrapping the song up perfectly.
If Heaven :x: Hell lives up to this, and the first two singles then Sum 41 are going to go out on a huge high, and will surely please fans new and old!
If you get chance, make sure to check out the excellent music video, which was filmed at The Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas and plays tribute to the great punk bands that inspired Sum 41 to pick up their guitars in the first place.
