SINGLE REVIEW | THE EGGMEN WHOOOOOO! – IT’S JUST YOUR MIND by Anne Kelly

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Referring to their forthcoming debut album as “pure trash”, Welsh band The Eggmen Whoooooo! have shared their latest and final teaser from said album Fuzzy Eggs Please ( 25/10/24) with brand new single ‘It’s Just Your Mind‘.

Lifting their band name from The Beatles famous lyric in ‘I am The Walrus‘, The Eggmen Whoooooo! (that’s six o’s, right?) don’t stop there with there the retro inspirations. Engulfed in groovy garage rock nostalgia reminiscent of bands like The Kinks, The Ramones or The Damned, all the way to the likes of The La’s or Stone Roses, their latest single ‘It’s Just Your Mind‘ follows their earlier releases ‘I Don’t Care‘, ‘Eggman v Hellboy‘ and ‘Rwy’n Dy Garu Di‘ – and it’s just as ridiculously fun as the rest.

On ‘It’s Just Your Mind‘ frontman, Benedict E Frye says“The verses are a list of someone’s problems that they may be dealing with and the choruses are of some well-meaning person brushing it off and saying: ‘it’s alright, you’ll be fine, it’s all just in your mind’. Yeah, good advice, Numbnuts.”

If you hadn’t picked up on it yet then you should probably know that this Welsh six-piece come with a good sense of humour. Not that they don’t take themselves seriously, but they emit fun; and in a climate which is increasingly dark, The Eggmen Whoooooo! (so many ooo’s now) offer a little bit of witty nostalgia. On the flip side though, the familiarity is maybe a little too familiar. It’s not particularly ‘fresh’ and on first listen already sounds like two fairly well known songs. But is this necessarily a bad thing? Music is suppose to evoke emotion and what does that more than musical nostalgia?

Lyrically, it fails to inspire and sonically it’s repetitive, but it still manages to be ear-wormingly good. There is much better, innovative and exciting new music out there, however there’s an air of endearment felt within their self-deprecating humour and despite the lack of originality, personality shines and makes The Eggmen Whoooooo! an interesting act to follow. I think live this band is where they will really thrive, but in the meantime, I look forward to hearing their debut album, Fuzzy Eggs, Please when it is released by Strangetown Records later this month.

Fuzzy Eggs, Please will be available on Vinyl, CD and digitally on October 25th.
