THE MYSTERINES EMERGE FROM THE SHADOWS WITH THEIR INCREDIBLE SOPHOMORE OFFERING ‘AFRAID OF TOMORROWS’

ALBUM REVIEW | THE MYSTERINES – AFRAID OF TOMORROWS by Holly Pimlott

Liverpool quartet The Mysterines are once again emerging from the shadows to bring an album both hauntingly beautiful and extensive in the sheer depth of its grit.

Following their top-10 debut album ‘Reeling’ (2022), the band are back and arguably better than ever. With a sound both so accomplished yet raw, it can only be said that ‘Afraid Of Tomorrows’ will set The Mysterines up for undoubted success in the near future and beyond.

Opening the album with ‘The Last Dance’, the aura of the record feels initially very powerful, almost mantra-like with front-woman Lia Metcalfe’s vocals commanding the attention of listeners in a way some would consider both enticing and intimidating. Partnering this with the classic rock tones of Callum Thompson’s accompanying guitars – the track sets the perfect precedent for just how incredible this sophomore album really is. Reflective of the growth of both maturity and perspective, the lyricism within ‘Afraid Of Tomorrows’ compared to its predecessor ‘Reeling’ must be mentioned as being one of the stand out features of this record. Accompanied by the harrowing pain, depth and sheer beauty within Metcalfe’s voice – each word appears to be sung with full emotion and meaning, emphasising just how talented this group of musicians really are.

Speaking on the album, Lia Metcalfe says “Afraid Of Tomorrows is a mirror where you find you’re nothing more than a formless being, one made from celestial constellations – of traumas, of the old and new, mistakes, addiction, fear and happiness, loneliness,  but a desire for life and the fight to keep living. It’s a collage of what’s been lost and of love unbounded.”

Featuring singles ‘Stray’ and ‘Sink Ya Teeth’, the success of the tracks landed The Mysterines features on Radio 1 with Clara Amfo, Radio 6 with Huw Stephens and live sessions at BBC Maida Vale with Steve Lamacq. These opportunities demonstrating the sheer impact the Liverpudlian quartet are having on the music industry as of current.

After just coming off the road from a huge support slot with the legendary Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes on tour, the group have recently been announced as Bloc Party’s special guest for their 20th anniversary show at Crystal Palace Park on the 7th July. Furthermore, large slots at iconic UK and European festivals are in the sights of the band this Summer, with appearances expected at the likes of 2000 Trees, Truck Festival and Tramlines

If this wasn’t enough to itch the scratch that is the need to see The Mysterines live, the band are set to go on a huge headline tour at the back end of 2024, kicking off in Dublin and landing them in Paris for the final show of the run.
