ALBUM REVIEW | THE SHERLOCKS – EVERYTHING MUST MAKE SENSE by Emma Carrington

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

This past Friday, one of the UK’s hottest indie band’s, The Sherlocks, released their latest album Everything Must Make Sense. This record marks the fifth album for the Yorkshire band and by far their best.

The central theme stems from trying to find balance in everyday life, as the title may suggest. Making sense of new beginnings and everyday circumstances- which may stem from the bands sudden rise in popularity and thousands of listeners.

The Sherlocks are a prime example of what indie music is at its core right now. Each song feels like a ballad, written to fit within its genre, as opposed to being a reflection of the band members itself; reminiscent of bands like Catfish and The Bottlemen or The Lathums.

Opening with the title track“Everything Must Make Sense”, the song sets the feel for the album with energetic yet easy, repetitive listening. Not necessarily poor quality but overdone, which seems to be prolific throughout the album. With its punchy guitar riffs and driving rhythms setting feet tapping, this track encapsulates the band’s growth, offering a new song to show off their established style. Following singles like “Man On The Loose” and “Bones” further highlight the band’s evolution. Described by frontman Kiaran Crook as a “monster tune”, “Bones” introduces a funky, bass-heavy groove that blends indie-rock with jangly dance beats, reminiscent of bands such as Prodigy or Primal Scream.

The album’s thematic diversity is shown in tracks like “How Are You Feeling?” and “28“, which delve into introspective themes of love and personal reflection. These slower, more contemplative pieces contrast with the high-energy anthems, showcasing the band’s versatility. “Bedlam Town” and “Tough Times Don’t Last” return to the upbeat tempo, with infectious hooks and resonating lyrics.“Better Alone” stands out as a testament to the band’s growth from their initial and early work, featuring intricate arrangements and emotional depth that highlight their maturation as musicians. Closing with “Here Comes The Rain”, the album concludes on a poignant note, blending melancholic tones with uplifting instrumentation, leaving a lasting impression.

Throughout Everything Must Make Sense, The Sherlocks demonstrate a refined sound that balances their indie-rock roots with some experimental elements that I would love them to explore more of in future releases. As I find indie music is often boring, I’m glad that The Sherlocks are starting to spice things iup and it’s definitely a pivotal point in the genre that needs to be explored more. The Sherlocks are true trendsetters. The album’s cohesive production, coupled with its thematic depth, marks a significant step forward for the band. Fans and newcomers alike will find much to appreciate in this ambitious and accomplished record.
