THE VELVETEERS RETURN WITH CATHARTIC NEW SINGLE “SUCK THE CHERRY”

The Velveteers are back today with their powerful new single, “Suck The Cherry.” This track, a cathartic rallying cry from frontwoman Demi Demitro, delves into feelings of being used and fed up in the face of vulnerability, encapsulated in the biting lyrics: “put my name in your mouth / chew it up and spit it out.”

The Colorado-based trio, featuring Demitro alongside dual drummers Baby Pottersmith and Jonny Fig (playing on a conjoined kit), have also released a stunning visual for the track. Directed by Nashville filmmaker Bella Mazzola, known for her work with Margo Price, Sharon Van Etten, and Sierra Ferrell, the video perfectly complements the song’s raw energy.

“Suck The Cherry” is the second glimpse into their upcoming full-length album, A Million Knives, which explores various forms of heartbreak. As Demitro recently told Billboard, the album is set to release on Valentine’s Day 2025.

Reflecting on the creation of the song, Demitro shares:

“I wrote ‘Suck The Cherry’ on a hot summer’s day when I was locked away in a cabin in Paonia, CO. All I had with me for entertainment was my guitar, a notebook, a little drum machine, and some cherries I had picked up earlier that day from the farmers market. I was messing around on the drum machine and found this beat that ended up influencing the entire song. It had this poppy/dancey feel but at the same time punk attitude. It had this chorus that was just so fun to sing, and it would always get stuck in my head.”

The thirteen tracks on A Million Knives were penned after a particularly grueling stretch of life on the road, exploring the often unspoken tolls of the music industry, especially for a non-binary, queer, and woman-led rock band. For the album’s sessions, they reunited with GRAMMY-winning producer Dan Auerbach, who praised the trio’s powerful live sound.

Following their 2021 debut Nightmare Daydream, which saw them sharing stages with Smashing Pumpkins and Guns N’ Roses, The Velveteers have continued to make waves. They recently headlined shows in New York and Nashville and will tour A Million Knives throughout 2025, with February and March dates across the Western United States.
