THE VIEW SHARE THE NEW SINGLE ‘SHOVEL IN HIS HANDS’
The return of The View has very much been a case of – if you’re going to make a comeback, make it big. Step one: effortlessly sell over 10,000 tickets over the course of four rapturously received homecoming shows in Glasgow. Step two: drop new tracks, including ‘Feels Like’ and ‘Neon Lights’, which evolve your sound, re-engage long-term fans and earn radio support including Jo Whiley at Radio 2 and Track of the Week at Amazing Radio. Step three: announce a busy summer festival schedule and an autumn headline tour to remind everyone else what they’ve been missing.
Now The View continue to build towards the August 11th of their long-awaited new album ‘Exorcism of Youth’ by sharing their new single ‘Shovel In His Hands’.
‘Shovel In His Hands’ establishes a darker mood than The View’s previous singles. Their way with an instantly memorable indie-rock anthem remains in sharp focus, but the main guitar riff touches upon the desert noir style of Pixies, while the haunting organ that lurks on the outskirts of the mix adds another foreboding element. It provides a fitting context for the lyrics, an update of the deal-with-the-devil narrative tradition which feels like a barbed political satire.
The music and the lyrics for the song were written by bassist/vocalist Kieren Webster.
As with the rest of the upcoming ‘Exorcism of Youth’ album, The View – featuring Kieren Webster alongside fellow founder members Kyle Falconer (vocals/guitar) and Pete Reilly (guitar) – recorded ‘Shovel In His Hands’ in Granada, Spain, with the Grammy Award winning producer Youth (The Verve, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Charlatans). The result is a record which echoes the youthful exuberance and irresistible hooks of their early days, but informed by the life experience of everything that has happened during their 17-year career. ‘Exorcism of Youth’ is available to pre-order HERE.
The View will play a selection of summer festivals before embarking upon a wider headline tour in the autumn. Tickets for the headline shows are available HERE.
In addition, Kyle Falconer’s gig / theatre show ‘No Love Songs’ is currently completing its first run of shows at Dundee Rep Theatre, with further dates scheduled from August 31st to September 9th. Featuring reimagined songs from Kyle’s solo album ‘No Love Songs For Laura’, the story follows Lana and Jesse, two new parents grappling with the challenges of parenthood and the weight of postnatal depression. It takes the audience on an emotional journey, which captures the essence of love, parenthood, and the struggles that come with it. Tickets are available HERE.
