FROM GRASSROOTS TO GREATNESS: THE IMAPCT OF THIS FEELINGS ‘BIG IN’ NIGHTS

I’ve attended a lot of gigs in my time, but many are unable to replicate This Feeling’s impact on new music in the local music industry due to their “Big In” performances. These gigs were for a long time a highlight in my gig calendar, I’d travel up and down the country to witness the raw energy of rock ‘n’ roll colliding with the undiluted passion of emerging indie bands. This Feeling’s “Big In” shows are centered around it. These concerts, which began in 2014, have grown into a hub for the UK’s emerging talent, giving new bands a chance to show off their abilities and interact with fans who are excited to witness the next big thing.

The past few years have been a whirlwind of incredible talent. In 2017, we witnessed the rise of bands like The Blinders, Strange Bones, and The Assist, among others. The following year, 2018, was nothing short of spectacular with performances by Lucie Barat, The Surrenders, Calva Louise, Avalanche Party, Himalayas, Sheafs, Anteros, and Judas.

2019 continued the trend of showcasing phenomenal new acts. We saw Getrz, Sad Boys Club, The Estevans, Zuzu, Hands Off Gretel, Latenight Honeymoon, and Youth Killed It take the stage. 2020 included The K’s, Ivory Wave, Cruel Hearts Club, The Dead Freights, RIC, Village Bully, The Gulps, and Kid Violet who all certainly lived up to the hype. These are just a few of line-ups that were a testament to the vibrant and diverse music scene, offering something for every music lover. It’s amazing to see how This Feeling has consistently been a platform for emerging artists, giving them the spotlight they deserve and helping them reach new heights in their careers.

This Feeling’s creator, Mikey Jonns, has played a vital role in establishing the genuine and enthralling ambiance of the “Big In” performances. These events are now a mainstay of the UK’s grassroots music scene because to his love of music and commitment to helping up-and-coming musicians.

Mikey has been dedicated to giving up-and-coming bands a stage on which to display their skills and engage with fans since the founding of This Feeling in 2014. The popularity of the “Big In” series has been fuelled by his sincere passion for music and faith in these musicians’ abilities. From the thoughtfully chosen lineups to the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere he cultivates, Mikey’s genuineness and excitement are apparent in every facet of the events. These events are more than simply concerts; they are gatherings of people who share a passion for music. Picture packed out grassroots venues, buzzing with anticipation as the next big act takes the stage. It’s a scene where dreams are born, and careers are launched. Bands like The Struts and Trampolene, who played the first “Big In” show, have made their mark in the music world.

But it’s not just about the music, This Feeling’s commitment to the grassroots scene is unwavering and has been for well over a decade. In 70 locations around the UK, from busy cities to tiny communities where live music may be a special treat, they stage more than 350 performances annually. Because of its extensive reach, you may see a “Big In” show wherever you are and see the next big thing before it becomes popular.

These shows have a huge influence. For many bands, it’s their first chance to experience the thrill of performing live out of their own towns. It can help them reach new heights as a rite of passage. As seen by bands like Crawlers, Red Rum Club, and The K’s, who attribute their career-launching break to This Feeling.

Not to be overlooked is the vinyl. Songs from the bands that performed at the gigs are included in the limited edition “Big In” vinyl collection that This Feeling distributes every year. It’s more than simply a collectible; it’s evidence of the skill and promise of these up-and-coming artists. The Teenage Cancer Trust also benefits from all sales, which raises the overall goodwill of the endeavour.

This Feeling’s “Big In” performances are really more than simply performances. They are an essential component of the grassroots music ecosystem, a celebration of new music, and a network of support for up-and-coming musicians. They ensure that the next generation of rock ‘n’ roll performers have a stage to shine on and preserve the essence of live music. Therefore, don’t pass up the opportunity to see a “Big In” concert if you ever get the chance. Perhaps you will see the emergence of the next great thing.

If the past is any indication, the future looks incredibly bright for the next wave of talent. The year Big in 2025 kicks off in Liverpool at the Jacaranda, over the next few weeks I’ll be taking a look at some of the bands on the line-ups. See below for tickets.
