Single Review | The Balla – I’m Not a Number by Jenna Millar

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Indie rock fan? Unfavourable to a 9-5 work slog? Perhaps, Liverpudlian? You’ll then find yourself aligned with Liverpool’s The Balla, a four-piece indie rock band with their debut single I’m Not a Number. This catchy, foreseeable-festival tune incorporates anthemic guitar rhythms with punchy lyricism that will get a whole crowd singing .

The four-piece declare a resistance to the typical 9-5 in this single, where their inherent defiance channels an ordeal of emotions to the listener as the message does not remain exclusive to The Balla themselves. The chorus harbours melodic riffs that pack a punch with staccato-like strings that play throughout.

Frontman Harry McKenny offers encapsulating vocals that entice the listeners with his lyrics, proving themselves to be highly memorable as they remain ringing with it’s melody, long after the final strum of the guitar. Ste Turnock provides intruiging drum heavy rhythms, Joey Verdin powers the single with enchanting bass lines, and Taylor McCallum leads the track with guitar reminiscent to the early 2000s in its’ indie rock core.

Excuse me Mr. Bossman, I’m not a number, I’m a man

Who works his socks off everyday

So your company can still underpay

The Balla have only just kick started their career and I already want to hear more. ‘I’m Not a Number’ is a stripped back, nostalgic take of a tune that is just itching to be sung to a lively crowd – and that lively crowd to be singing it back too. What’s next for The Balla?
