TRAMLINES 2024 “FEMALE FRONTED BANDS ARE HERE TO STAY AND SLAY”

It’s about time that festivals recognise the powerhouse talent of female-fronted bands, especially as headliners. Although there is still a significant lack of female representation at festivals and within the music industry, bands like the ones listed below show that the future of the music industry is unquestionably female dominated. Not only are these women shattering stereotypes, but they are completely changing the scene with their ingenious sounds, viewpoints, and boundless energy.

This year, I’m celebrating the electrifying upcoming performances of artists at Tramlines like Coach Party, whose raw energy and captivating stage presence are second to none. Then let’s not forget The Mysterines, whose infectious grunge rock anthems are sure to gain them an array of new fans and get the crowd moving. And how about Sprints, with their unapologetic punk rock vibes that challenge the status quo? These incredible women are not just holding their own; they’re redefining the music scene. Bands like these cement that the future of music is female, and it’s bigger, and more unapologetic than ever.

So, lets step up and give these brilliant female bands the audiences they deserve, get them on your must see list and let’s make Tramlines 2024 a true celebration of diversity and talent.

COACH PARTY

Punk and indie rock are dynamically combined throughout the music of the Isle of Wights, Coach Party. Influenced by prolific bands like Tame Impala, Sonic Youth, and Nirvana, there’s so much to love about this band.  “Killjoy,” their debut album, features a wide range of emotions, from raw, punk-infused songs like “Parasite” to more sombre, indie pop tunes like “July”. The group delivers upbeat, pint-spilling indie rock while tackling heavy topics like self-loathing, complex relationships, and facing inner demons in their lyrics. The band have honed their unbridled noise to make one of the most blistering live shows that you do not want to miss.

THE MYSTERINES

I first saw the The Mysterines at the Leadmill supporting Miles Kane in May 2022 and boy did they leave a strong impression on me. I’m a grunge/punk girl at heart always have been, give me a bit of Courtney Love or Kat Bjelland and I’m in my element. Frontwoman Lia Metcalfe embodies the spirit of 90’s grunge, whilst ferociously bringing it to the present, her voice is often described as powerful and raw, with a gritty edge that complements the band’s alternative rock and grunge sound. Lia’s commanding stage presence is undeniable. She excels in delivering both high-energy performances and more nuanced, emotive performances. This versatility renders their music captivating and engaging, making them an act you definitely wouldn’t want to miss at Tramlines this year.

SPRINTS

Dublin, Ireland-based Sprints is a garage punk band that was founded in 2019. I’ve been a huge fan of their sound, which encompasses all my favourite genres of  grunge, garage rock, and punk. The band are well-known for being visceral and energetic in their live performances which makes them a must see for me!. Back in January 2024, they released “Letter to Self,” their debut album, which received widespread acclaim. Songs like “A Wreck (A Mess)” and “Cathedral,” which showcase their intense live magnitude, are included on the album but my all time favourite is “ADORE ADORE ADORE”. Sprints have performed widely in Europe, the US, and the UK. They have received recognition for their explosive live performances and are renowned for their socially focused lyrics that touch on issues like personal challenges and body autonomy. Get me an earful of that with a cold pint.

NEWDAD

NewDad is an indie rock band hailing from Galway, Ireland, formed in 2018. Their music is a stunning blend of indie rock, shoegaze, and lo-fi, drawing comparisons to bands like The Cure and Beabadoobee. Think dreamy, reverb-laden guitars, introspective lyrics, and a melancholic yet hopeful vibe and you’re in the right place. The band released debut EP, Waves in 2021, which featured outstanding tracks like “I Don’t Recognise You” and “Blue,”. Their second EP, Banshee, in 2022, further solidifying their place in the indie music scene. Dont miss the band that are guaranteed to bring their mesmerising ethereal soundscapes to Hillsborough park this weekend. Known for their intimate and immersive quality, making you feel like you’re part of a shared emotional journey. If you’re a fan of indie rock with a touch of shoegaze and heartfelt storytelling, NewDad is definitely a band worth checking out.
