UK POP PUNKS EAT DEFEAT DELIVER SUMMERY SOPHOMORE ALBUM ‘MY MONEY’S ON ME’

The summer may be struggling to start in the UK (again) but that hasn’t stopped Leeds based pop punk band Eat Defeat from attempting to jump start it with an album full of sunny bangers!

Opener ‘Not Coming Back’ sets the bands stall out early and is an ode to moving on with your life (“So I’m getting on that plane and I’m not coming back”) and the album doesn’t let up from there. Ranging from the ska-tinged ‘Much More Than I Wanted‘ and ‘We Live In A Society‘, the bubblegum thrash found on ‘Everything Is Broken‘, ‘Giving Up (On Giving Up)‘ and ‘Slip Through The Cracks‘ or the obligatory pop punk ballad ‘Forever‘, there’s an incredible range of variety from under the punk umbrella to be found here. And of course there’s a couple of straight up pop punk tunes ‘Chance Would Be Fine Thing‘ is a banging song about lost love with the excellent refrain – “I’m wasting food cooking meals for two” – and the closing title track sounds like it wouldn’t feel out of place on a mid-2000s compilation CD, plus the very melodic hardcore ‘Gnarcolepsy‘.

Evoking memories of the pop punk scene of the early 2000’s (Captain Everything!, New Found Glory, 4ft Fingers, Motion City Soundtrack, MxPx), the album perfectly captures timeless themes that never really leave us – alienation, the pitfalls of relationships, growing up and getting out of the daily grind. Each song features huge pop punk riffs, some excellent hooks and great vocals, but overall it’s an energetic album from start to finish and is a perfect listen for the summer months.
