UNAPOLOGETIC POP | NEW SINGLE ‘SEVEN’ BY LOIS

*****

Matt Moorhouse

Following the release of the highly commended singles ‘MINE’ and ‘LOVE YOU BETTER’, the rising alt-pop star Lois has returned this week with the single ‘SEVEN’ before the release of her sophomore EP next month.

This song feels like a breath of fresh air for a young woman navigating a world of uncertainty. ‘SEVEN’ details a reclamation of self and channeling power – I spoke to Lois back in March to hear about her emotional and musical navigation of this project, and hearing this single has satiated knowing her creative process.

Nostalgia mixed with acceptance brings a cathartic listen to this single. Co-written with Scott Verril and Pura Bliss, the track’s soundscape is an ethereal take on pop.

“Four walls, missed calls and I’m 15

Old songs that I Played from a CD

Like salt in a wound and I can’t breathe”

Lois’ vocal abilities shine throughout this record. An almost spoken-word reel of lyrics are met with a honeyed and melodic refrain, ‘I don’t know you anymore’ and lead us into her irrevocably catchy chorus. This track really does take me back to the charts 7 years ago: heavy reverb and synths with a meticulous layering of vocals amongst the track’s sleek simplicity.

The Northern born musician channels strength and self-awareness throughout each single. Lois, who oozes confidence, will have no problem growing her audience with the release of her EP next month, so far each track released has an unmistakeable magnetism. It is satisfying to witness the rise of powerful women in pop with Lois’ discography making nods to artists like Self Esteem. ‘SEVEN’ is a beautiful example of this manifesto, and it oozes nostalgia through our headphones.
